I believe that Standard English should be taught in high schools for many different reasons.  David Crystal's definition of a standard is, "a prestige variety used as an institutionalized norm in a community"(459).  A school is a kind of community for children and I believe that children need structure to keep them focused.  Children learn English every year that they are in school and as they move from elementary school to junior high and then to high school each year of the English taught to them is more complex.  I believe that the teachers need  to teach a Standard English so that the children learn something new each year so that they will learn all that they can about English by the time that they graduate from high school.  I think that if there was not a Standard English taught then each teacher would teach the English that they wanted to teach and it would confuse the children learning a different type of English each year. I believe that children should experience a variety different teaching techniques in order to learn the English language but they should learn a Standard English language.
