Story:

The flight recorder of the 200-year-old U.S.S. Valiant relays a tale
of terror - a magnetic storm at the edge of the galaxy causes crewman
to gain ESP ability. The Captain of that ship had to order its destruction.
As the Enterprise nears the same barrier, Kirk elects to probe beyond its
depths (outside the galaxy) with disastrous results. Kirk's closest
friend Lt. Commander Gary Mitchell is affected with hightened ESP.
When Mitchell's mutating ESP abilities threaten the safety of his ship,
Kirk must make an agonizing decision: maroon Mitchell on a desolate planet
or kill him while he still can.

Other people and places:

Vulcan: Spock's home planet where they "aren't supposed to have feelings
like ours." (Note: Spock acts like everyone on the bridge is deaf because
he yells out his reports even tho it is fairly quiet and everybody is
standing right there.(<>..<>)

Delta Vega: planet with a lithium cracking station, totally automated,
desolate, only visited by ore ships every 20 years, (and then what?)
rich in crystalline minerals. oxygen atmosphere (cloudy, blue sky and
they didnt wear space suits)

Phineus Tarbol, an inhabitant of the Canopius planet (there is a star called
Canopus. I wonder if he mispronounced it?) He wrote "Nightengale
Woman" in 1996, "one of the most passionate love sonnets in the past
couple of centuries."

Denim 4- (there is a star called Deneb, wonder if that's what he meant)
no info (visited by Kirk and Mitchell in the past)

Demeris: inhabited by rodent like creatures that throw poison darts
(visited by Kirk and Mitchell in the past in which Mitchell saved Kirk's life.)

Kirk had been a teacher (at the Academy?) as a Lieutenant before getting
the Enterprise and he almost married "a blond technician" (wonder who,
Carol Markus, maybe?)

Quotes:

"I'll just keep getting stronger, You know that don't you?" Mitchell
-------------------
"Command and compassion is a fool's mixture."
-------------------
"Morals are for men, not gods."
-------------------

Tidbits: On the toomb stone it reads: James R. Kirk, the only visual record
of the middle initial that changed.

Moral: WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD
Kirk kills his best friend, destroying all evidence that his middle initial
is not really "T".
