Dr. Richard Daystrom is given permission by the Federation to hook his state-of-the-art computer, the M-5, to the Enterprise to prove that a starship can be run more efficiently by a machine than by humans (only 20 crew needed). For a time, things go perfectly and Kirk begins to feel useless, but eventually the M-5, whose memory patterns are based on Daystrom's, acts without logic, destroying another starship for no reason. Kirk, rising to the occasion, talks a machine to death....again.
