Story:
The Enterprise comes across a derelict "sleeper ship" DY 100 class vessel, named the Botany Bay, which contains a crew of 82 (72 still alive: 42 men and 30 women, 12 malfunctioned) in suspended animation. Khan and historian Marla McGivers, nearly takes over the Enterprise but they fail and are sentenced to the savage Ceti Alpha V. Which leads into ST:The Wrath of Khan movie.

Star Base 12 - they are going to take the company there after their revival.

DY 100 class vessel - old earth type for interplanetary travel built in the 1990's, atomic powered, transistor units. but the botany bay is not in any historical records.

Mid 1990's was a time of the third world war. the Eugenics War, the War to End Tyranny. Khan and his crew were the last to be overthrown and then disappeared.(Now we know what happened to them.)

2018 must have been the date of the discovery of the time warp that made interstellar travel much more practical. Before that, sleeper ships were used to place persons in 'suspended animation' to endure long space journeys.
