Story:
While negotiating with the Halkan counsel for dilithium crystals, Kirk, McCoy, Scotty and Uhura are transported to a parallel dimension on an alternate, savage Enterprise due to a magnetic storm on Halkan. In this universe, the Federation is as feared as the Klingons and crewmen move up in rank by assassination. Spock (with a beard) is still first officer, but his logic is coupled with a shocking ruthlessness. Kirk and company try to fit in until they figure out a way home, barely avoiding discovery by those around them. Simultaneously, Kirk tries to convince Spock to see the logic in changing the order; that the Federation will ultimately be defeated by rebel forces and he, Spock, can be the man who can lead the revolution. Scotty ultimately devises a plan by which they will attempt to duplicate the conditions present during the ion storm and transport to their own universe, but if they miss the window of opportunity, they will be trapped there forever.
Halkon: earthlike with human inhabitants who are peaceful, against violence and would willing be exterminated to preserve their ethics. Planet has a pink sky and dangerous magnetic storms.
Facts about the alternate universe:
Tantalus Field: Kirk plundered an unknown alien scientist's laboratory to obtain it. it 'made you Captain.' It is a device installed in Kirk's quarters that zaps people away. (The Tantalus field was invented and used on the Tantalus Penal Colony, by Simon Van Gelder in 'Dagger of the Mind.' But that is in the universe we know and love:)
the Agony booth: a most effective means of discipline. A device in which a person (Chekov) is strapped in and causes great pain.
an agonizer: a small device worn on the belt used by superior officers on subordinates to inflict punishment and pain.
Standard procedure: phaser barage on cities who resist the Empire
ISS Enterprise: mirror image of the USS Enterprise only backwards.
How Kirk came to be Captain of the ISS Enterprise:
Assassinated Capt. Christopher Pike
Suppression of Gorlan(no other info) Uprising through destruction of
rebel home planet, and the execution of 5000 colonists on Vega 9.
Spock uses the Vulcan mind probe on McCoy to get to the truth.
