Factoids:
Alert condition 3- intruder aboard
Neural Neutralizer-a device used for rehabilitation of violent antisocials by means of a brain neutralizaing beam. Dr. Noel states that this type of treatment is a common practice at the time. According to Dr. Adams, Van Gelder had dammaged neural synapses due to an experiment accident which erases memories and thoughts. But Dr. Adams uses it so the brain will be filled with someones elses thoughts, preferably his own.
Spock uses the Vulcan Neck Pinch on Van Gelder
Spock demonstrates the Vulcan Mind Meld on Van Gelder. It is an ancient technique to probe the mind. It is a personal thing to the Vulcan people, part of their private lives. He hestitates to use it on a human because it could be dangerous to the nerves and blood vessels. It only affects the person touched and is not hypnosis (?).
Quotes:
"We (the Vulcan society) desposed of emotion, doctor. Where there's
no emotion, there is no motive for violence." Spock to McCoy.
---------------
"May we never find space so vast, planets so cold, hearts and minds
so empty that we cannot fill them with love, warmth." Dr. Adams
---------------
"He's dead, Captain." McCoy to Kirk about Dr. Adams after his mind
was emptied by the Tantalus neural neutralizer.
_______________
"It's hard to believe that a man could die of lonliness." McCoy.
