The Enterprise arrives at Ardana to obtain zienite, a cure for a plague on Merak II. What they find is a divided race, with the elite living in the city in the clouds while the "have-nots" mine the zienite mineral, and they seem quite insane. Kirk realizes that the gas of the mines is causing this madness and he sets about getting both sides to talk out their differences.

Marak2: planet suffering a plague in their life support systems and need the mineral Zienite to fight the plague.

Ardanna:
Stratos: The city in the clouds, a perfect example of sustained antigravity elevation, where art is the chief occupation, no violence and totally intellectual

Zienite: ore mined on the planet that will stop the plague but which emits a gas that causes mental retardation and emotional instability

Troglytes: miners on Ardanna oppressed and prejudiced against by the Stratos city dwellers

Disrupters: small band of troglyte malcontents who are violently and trecherously trying to overthrow Stratos and making demands on the high council for equal opportunity
