HDL the "Good" Cholesterol
High-density lipoprotein (HDL) also known as the "good" cholesterol transports excess cholesterol from the tissues of the body back to the liver.  In the liver, the cholesterol is either recycled for future use or excreted from the body.  HDL transport is the only way the body can get rid of excess cholesterol.  It helps protect the arteries and if there is enough HDL present, it can even reverse the build up of fatty plaques in the arteries.  However, if there is excess VLDL and triglycerides present in the body, HDL is unable to carry cholesterol as well and the level of HDL decreases.
