"I love you, Minerva."
They lay among cool blades of grass, a tangle of long limbs and fine hair, tumbled together beside the slick, glassy surface of the lake, which reflected a solstice sky peppered with diamond chip stars.
"You don't have to say that, you know," she said softly, feeling his cool breath against the skin of her temple.
"I wouldn't if I had to. I like to. It gives us meaning."
She laughed low in her throat. "Are you looking for meaning? How very unlike you."
"Is it really? I wouldn't think so." He looked up at the sky again. "I've been searching for meaning, in my own way, for a long time now."
"And you've found it?"
"I think I may have."
She traced a hand up his slender chest, reveling in the knowledge that he shuddered beneath her touch. "Tell me it's not me. I couldn't bear the responsibility."
"No." He caught her hand. "Not you. Not you alone, at least." He continued to look at the stars, a rapturous, intense expression on his face. Like a saint, burning with some holy conviction. "Things are happening. Everything is shifting and moving. I had no idea before, but now� This will be an amazing time to be alive."
"What changed?" she asked, not really caring to hear the answer. She kissed his throat, hearing his gasp of reaction.
"Oh� I can't think straight when you do that�" He rolled out of her reach, unfolding himself from the prison of her arms. "Do you really want to know?"
She sat up, watching him intently. "Yes, tell me."
"I can do better. I'll show you." He stretched and leaned back exposing his long, pale throat to the sky. "Tomorrow. Say you'll come with me."
"Of course." She paused. "Can you tell me anything at all before then?"
He smiled, a graceful almost feminine smile, and reached for her with a long, lazy hand. "Just wait. Be patient for me."
She moved back against him. "Well, I'm going to be expecting something rather extraordinary now, you know." She smiled up into his fair, serious face.
"When have I ever disappointed you before?" he asked and kissed her deeply.
