The Chronicles of Shadowfall

The only difference between man and beast is that man tries to convince himself that he is otherwise.

At one time this was not so.   Long ago, mankind were children of the earth.   They worshipped those who are now called the Old Gods, the forgotten ones.   There were many gods, and all were responsible for preserving the great balance.   Death was as cherished as life.   Honoring your kin and defeating your enemies to protect them were signs of the greatest nobility, and gave birth to great leaders of men.  The old kings.

When the Old Gods created mankind, they did not foresee the jealous hands of the one known as Lair.   Lair was a god poorly looked upon by the other gods.  He was originally the god of beasts, but did so much harm he became known as the god of catastrophe.   According to legend, a dark chaotic god not of their world gave Lair his vengeance.  He gave Lair the powers of chaos.  And when the Old Gods blessed mankind with their gifts, Lair secretly gave unto them chaos.

Disobedience, self-destruction, arrogance.  These were the agents of chaos given unto men.  When the other gods discovered this they banished Lair and reluctantly considered to destroy mankind and start over.  Unfortunately the gods could not bring themselves to harm their own children, especially under the cries of the mother goddess, Gaia.  The gods for some time were able to keep men from their corruption, doing everything they could to teach them morality and balance.

Nearly all men strayed from their gods, and the gods lost their power.  Nearly all.

Man conquered one another; they killed their wise kings and bore their blood-gleaming crowns.   And from then on it was nothing but war.  They created new gods that appealed to their new codes of honor.  There were some who did not forget their creators.  These men were outcast by their brothers and were called barbarians or outlanders as they roamed the wilderness outside of human civilization.

As it stands, there are four kingdoms in Caednar (lands ruled by men).  They are called Caelbern, Norwich, Langeridge, and Ardara.  Their kings are often called The Royals.  Although they claim to try to co-exist in peace, there are many underlying agendas that result in the harm of innocent people, and war threatens to break out every day.  Each King wishes to lord over all other kings, so that they may claim to be the heir of their new god, the God-King Sol.

While man wages his wars, a god bound in darkness howls for his revenge. . . and is soon to be answered.
