Ulver - 'Metamorphosis' EP - By C. Diamantis
This EP was released after Ulvers magnum opus Themes From William Blakes The Marriage Of Heaven And Hell and finally cuts any remaining ties that the band had with metal or rock. The four tracks contained within are fine examples of electronic music that show the profound in change in the bands musical style. The easiest way to describe this release is by doing a track-by-track description The opening track of the release may have a title that reminds us of Nattens Madrigal but the connection stops there. It has a great rhythm and its structure is very well conceived. It seems to be a bit dance-oriented but that derives mostly from the beats of the song. Its not, however, a song for the dancefloors of the clubs. Very interesting composition. Next we move on to Gnosis the only song that contains vocals in this album, the lyrics of which were taken by Rimbauds poem Bad Blood. It starts with some strange noises and beats but towards the end of the songs where the vocals appear it becomes even better. A pretty slow track, it has the most normal structure out of all the other songs on the record, but still is very good. The third track Limbo Central introduces us to the future of the band since its musical style is very close to the next release of the band Perdition City. Melodic, electronic and totally instrumental it takes the band closer to the lounge/chill-out style. Finally we have Of Wolves and Withdrawal, the closing track of the album. It starts with four minutes of near silence and the next minutes are even stranger. I dont really know how to describe it, its like the soundtrack to a claustrophobic film. Very, very strange. Its understandable that this is not a normal release but rather a step towards the future of the band. I believe that it is focussed mostly on the fans of the band or the people who like electronic music. Whether you like it or not is up to your personal tastes Metal Obsessive Grade: 85% |
