Stabbing Westward - 'Stabbing westward' - By C. Impey
For this album, SW have changed the style of their music from their brilliant industrial style rock, evident in the superb "Darkest Days" and previous albums, to a brighter, more melodic approach that could easily be classed as soft rock. However don't mistake them for a 'normal', plain and boring soft rock act...tacky cheese (i.e. Bon Jovi style)... SW have managed to keep a hint of the darkness of their industrial days whilst creating a more musical album. You could say they sold out, changing their sound to sell more records. "Stabbing Westward" is definetely a more accessible and listenable album, but you might still like it if you liked the older material (as I did). With Christopher Hall on vocals nothing can go wrong...he proves yet again that he has an amazing voice which just seems to get better and better from album to album, definately peaking on "Stabbing Westward". The lyrics are also as brilliant as Hall's voice, enchanting and frequently beautiful. My favourite songs on this album are "So Far Away", "Wasted", "I Remember" and "Angel" but I can't say I dislike any of the other songs. A perhaps weaker song is "Happy" but in my opinion it doesn't put down the album at all...every song has its place. The sound goes from the strong and powerful "So Far Away" to the mellow ballad "I Remember", this album has a good mix of songs. If you're a fan of rock music generally I really recommend this album...it's very good. If you tend not to like pop/soft rock then stay away. Metal Obsessive Grade: 72% |
