Rollins Band - 'Weight' - By W. Spurrier
Its about time this was re-released. As a Rollins band virgin (although familiar with his Black Flag output) I was told that this was one of his albums I needed to sample. The first thing that must be said, is that if you already own this album, its not really worth getting this re release. The liner notes penned by Milton Knowlton are very average, and not very extensive. The bonus tracks are live tracks from the album. Liar live is the only one worth hearing, thanks to Hanks humorous changing of the words. But what of the rest of the album? Disconnect is a strong, muscular opener, giving us a ready feel for the heavy blues which is Rollins forte. Plus it also reminds me of the Taxi driver inspired video. Although not very in depth, Milton Knowltons liner notes are right about one thing; Rollins does make you think. Civilized, a song about gun laws in America, gives you Rollins' own twist on this provocative subject. Musically its also a killer of a song, the aggression of which should be the soundtrack to a hardkore workout session down the gym. We also have the song Liar which really gave the band their break on MTV (you remember, the video where Rollins paints himself red.) Liar showed the nation Rollins' twisted sense of humour, which formerly wouldve only been known about in the underground scene. Its not only Liar which makes this an important album, its also songs like Fool and Step back which although heavy, always seem to manage to lodge their tune into your brain. An important album, and well worth the purchase for Rollins virgins like me. But if youve already got this album and arent a collector, its doubtful whether youd want to purchase it again for the liner notes or the bonus tracks.
