Rage - 'Black in mind' - By J. Korkiamki
I think Rage is one of those bands, who can perform any kind of music they please, without sounding ridiculous or just plain disgusting. Peavy is a musical genius, and I personally wouldnt wait anything else from him but awesome, sharp metal. Well, Black In Mind is once again a 14 song epic full of Rage songs, but on this album many things have changed. Because of that, Black In Mind is one of the worst Rage albums Ive heard. The bands almost irreplaceable, long time guitarist Manni Schmidt left before Black In Mind was finished, probably to take the nap he has needed for so long. I can somehow understand that. The hard life on the road and an album just after the tour can easily get on your nerves, and the band went through all that after 'Trapped!'. Manni has been replaced with two guitarists on Black In Mind, and even while theres two, Sven Fischer and the brother of the drummer Chris Efthimiadis, Spiros, they still dont seem to surpass Mannis talent, at least not on this album. Black In Minds biggest flaw is the sound quality. The sounds have been mixed with variable success, mainly because the band tested a lot of new techniques on this album, in fact this was the first Rage album to feature the bands very own symphony orchestra, Lingua Mortis. The drums are amazingly hollow throughout the album, and the sounds overall are very light and sometimes even annoying. Well, my mind isnt completely black after listening to this. There is cream in the crap, so to speak. Alive But Dead is definitely one of the best Rage songs ever, as is the much faster Until I Die. The emotionally loaded Shadow Out Of Time and the sensitive ballad All This Time are also important cards up Rages sleeve. Unfortunately, there are also many songs that are really bad. Theres no way around it; A Spiders Web is probably one of the crappiest metal songs Ive ever heard, and the ten minute track In A Nameless Time is out of tune, and boring as f*ck. My conscience doesnt let me say more bad things about the album, because this IS a Rage album and in the end, its not bad, its just an average record, which I think has got too much appreciation in its part. Some have said that it even beats the crap out of 'Trapped!' and its even better successor The Missing Link. If any Rage album, past, present or future, can even beat out a fart out of them, I will personally call Peavy, invite him to Finland on my expense and buy him a beer. Metal Obsessive Grade: 78% |
