The Offspring - 'Ignition' - By M. Freeman
Surprisingly enough, Orange County rockers The Offspring were not always a farce band producing happy pop trash singles for the close minded chart friendly generation, but once upon a time they had the ability to write and produce excellent music. For some reason, unknown to most, this album never received the acclaim that Smash (album number three) could boast, don't be fooled by the sales figures, though, because as far as key components for a memorable album go, Smash is not a patch on this, Ignition. In 1993, when this album was released, it went relatively un-noticed, and only upon the release of Smash and other chart orientated albums did the band become an icon for the music television generation, if only they had stayed in the shadows. Ignition combines heavy(ish) punk with melodic lyrics and beat transitions which create a unique hybrid sound that the band could call their own. The Californian four piece became a victim of their own success in the late 90's leaving long time fans with only memories of the real Offspring, rest assured, the album is packed with good memories. The clear sound change from the bands debut to Smash points to this album being the centre piece in what would prove to be the turning point in their career. 'Session' is the album opener and would have had just as good an impact on the bands debut album with it's fast paced rhythm and no-holds-barred vocals. This manner is continued while songs identify the bands feelings on suicide, governmental issues, police brutality and the confusion of love, along with dealing with many of lifes other problems, perhaps this is why the album gained cult status with teenagers world wide after long overdue exposure. The pace overall is fast, except for the masterpieces of slow music that are 'Dirty Magic' and 'No Hero' which are further proof that The Offspring had made an album with many an unheard potential classic. The ability of Ignition to provide the listener with an intermediate between punk and rock music is done with finesse and true style. The quicker moments on the album, including 'Kick Him When He's Down', 'Hypodermic' and 'Burn It Up', provide an angsty feel which is evenly scattered over this outstandingly co-ordinated album.
