Neurosis - 'Souls at zero' - By W. Spurrier
Back in 1992 when this album was released, bands who's main forte was dealing with apocalyptic visions, tended to come from the extreme end of the musical spectrum. To them the world was going up in smoke and they revelled in it. Then along came Neurosis who took this theme on board in a slightly more subtle manner. Neurosis had been around as a punk/hardkore sounding band since the mid eighties. 'Souls..' though saw them taking a musically different direction, by bringing in keyboards and samples. They also added a more subtle and epic edge, whilst retaining their punk energy. The first song 'To crawl under ones skin' exemplifies this. It starts off with a collage of peoples voices. This leads to a subtle keyboard intro which goes into the main part of the song; a crushing energetic riff. The songs 'Souls at zero' and 'A chronology for survival' show where Neurosis were intending to go. All are long and have an epic feel, and 'Chronology..' even includes, for one of the first times, Chris Force's violin, adding an extremely nerve dangling effect to the song. So this then really was a nasty little statement of intent, which hints well at Neurosis' potential for the future, and showed us what was to come. Metal Obsessive Grade: 72% |
