Ministry - 'Greatest fits' - By J. Moulton
This is not a compilation that you really need, even if you are a die-hard Ministry fan. You should own nearly all the material anyway. The new track to tempt you to part with your money, What About Us, is taken from the new film A.I., and it's your standard Ministry blueprint. Al's distorted vocals over a soundscape straight from Hell. There's also another live version of So What (there's already a version on Ministry's live album, of course) and the infamous cover of Sabbath's Supernaut. You should of heard this version already, either via the web, or from its inclusion in the Wax Trax! Box Set from a few years ago. So what does that leave for the rest of the CD? Well it's got some damn fine tracks from Ministry's height during the Land/Mind/Psalm days. Classics like the crushing Stigmata, the trash-esque Thieves and the harrowing Just One Fix. Gibby Haynes of the Butthole Surfers provides vocals for Jesus Built My Hotrod, a fast, mosh intensed, recording. From Filth Pig, their bastardisation of Bob Dylan's Lay Lady Lay has to be heard to believe, and Bad Blood is picked as one of the songs from their last, and perhaps most underrated work, Dark Side Of The Spoon. Song wise, I would of personally ditched the So What live version, and replaced it with Scarecrow from Psalm 69, as it's possibly Ministry's finest hour. That aside, it's still a great package. If you're a long time Ministry fan, then perhaps it's not worth shelling out for, but if you're new to Ministry and the whole Industrial concept, then head towards your local record store now. You'll be back the next day, cash in hand, buying up the back catalogue. Metal Obsessive Grade: 75% |
