Metallica - 'The black album' - By C. Impey
This is my 2nd Metallica album and after listening to this, I think most people, as I am, would be very keen to get hold of some more. It's a masterpiece, the classic "Enter Sandman" features on this album, which is enough to make anyone love it. My favorite song is "Sad But True". James Hetfield's vocals are stunning on this track, backed up by a chunky guitar riff, and the usual pulsing drums of Lars Ulrich. A few weak moments are provided by the final 2 tracks, especially "Struggle Within", which I don't like at all. All of the other tracks are generally very good, Hetfield's shows his dynamic range of vocals extremely well, from the mellower-type ballads like "Unforgiven" and "Nothing Else Matters", to the faster more 'thrashy' powerful songs like "Through The Never", "Of Wolf and Man" and "Struggle Within". The lyrics provided by Hetfield and co. are good all round, not the best I've ever heard, but definitely better than most. Most Metallica fans signal this album as the end of Metallica, their more late albums being poor efforts (this isn't my opinion however), I don't know whether that means this album is their best (I haven't heard enough to comment), but it would be very easy to believe that was the case.
