Machine Head - 'Supercharger' - By S. Burrell
The fourth Machine Head album. Hyped for months, and with a name like 'Supercharger', I just couldn't wait to get my hands on it. However, when I finally did, I wasn't as impressed as I hoped I would be

'Supercharger' is a very fitting name for this album, describing the raw energy and speed it features well. Tracks such as 'All in your head', 'Trephination' and 'Supercharger' show off the talent this band has, Robb's voice sounding the best it has ever been with real emotion, as he experiments more and more with his melodic side. And Ahrue's impressive guitaring, really making the tracks interesting and unique to each other, whilst the drums and bass not only do well to structure the songs, but add to the rawness of the album.

However, unfortunately, this effort also has more than its fair share of dodgy moments. 'White-knuckle blackout', or any of the tracks from nine to eleven do not stand out or appeal to me at all. Then there are songs like 'American high', which, although I'm sure would sound great live and create a very lively mosh-pit, sounds somewhat stupid on CD, with Robb's lyrics beginning to worsen after four albums.

Even so, it is obvious Machine Head were very much still experimenting with this album - always trying to break new ground, which is a good thing. Their music has always been original and unique. Also, although this effort is somewhat disappointing in comparison to Machine Head's other three LP's, and against all the hype it had, the band obviously enjoyed making it, which is really all that matters.

So, it's roll on album number five, I can't wait to see where the 'Head will go next. Hopefully still experimenting, but at the same time, creating a great album from beginning to end, unlike this opus, which, although does include some top songs, fails to keep it up all the way through.
