My Dying Bride - 'The dreadful hours' - By S. Burrell
My Dying Bride never cease to woo me with their passionate, moody rendition of goth/doom/death, and this record is no exception. An album that could almost be called a 'best of' of MDB's work, 'The dreadful hours' features everything a 'Bride obsessive would want, the experimentation of 'Le figlie della tempesta', the heart-quenching romanticism of 'My hope, the destroyer', the atmospheric display of despair and sorrow with 'The dreadful hours', and the doom-ridden remake of the 'As the flower withers' classic 'The return to the beautiful', it would undoubtedly also appeal to any fan of darker metal. The studio sequel to 'The light at the end of the world', 'The dreadful hours' provides a much warmer, less bleak perspective than its predecessor, however, this does not take away a morsel of melancholy or depression from the record, if anything, it increases its emotion and touches you deeper. So, a very 'traditional' MDB album, which, though keeping with the 'Bride trend, manages to differ severely from any previous release. In fact, with the exception of mediocre tracks three, and maybe four, (Which are not bad quality songs, they just don't 'float my boat' as much as everything else on the album) this may be one of the best records MDB have presented to us yet, and would be the perfect introduction to the sorrow-soaring maze of misery that is My Dying Bride.
