In The Woods... - 'Omnio' - By C. Diamantis
In this second, full-length album In The Woods appear radically changed. The addition of a female vocalist, Synne Diana (who did her first appearance with in the band in the 7 White Rabbit) and the great turn in the musical style of the band surprised many people when this album was released. Fortunately this change also changed the status of the band from a very good melodic black metal band to one of the most important atmospheric bands in the world. After the release of Heart Of The Ages the band decided to totally abandon the realm of black metal and instead focus their efforts on the more melodic and atmospheric side of their music. The result of this decision is one of the most emotional and moody albums of all time. Both singers of the band have very expressive voices and especially, Synne Diana, is one of the two (the other being Anneke Van Giersbergen) best female vocalists in metal. The compositions are mostly slow, but also contain a few mid-tempo and even a few up-tempo moments. The main characteristic of all the songs are the intense emotions that dominate them. There are some parts in the album that are so emotional and melancholic that its impossible not to move even the most indifferent listener. Somewhere it is written that this album is the soundtrack to the rise and fall of mankind, Id like to think of it as a journey to the deepest reaches the human soul. There are some moments in the history of music where inspiration is so strong during the creation of an album, that its difficult to believe how good the result is. This is definitely one of those moments. The lyrics, while removed from the pagan concept of the first album, seem to share the same beliefs and thoughts. And I used the word seem because sometimes they get so abstract and strange that Im unable to give them a definitive meaning. That doesnt make them any less beautiful, however, because sometimes the strangest things are the most beautiful. After all, who said that poetry is always easy to understand. And believe me, the words that accompany the songs in this album are poetry, in its purest form. With this album starts the approach of the band to the music of the 70s and 60s, a journey that will continue for two more albums before they split. I think you should take my advice and let this band take you along on their journey. You may not know the destination, but sometimes I believe these people know a few more things than the rest of the world. Otherwise, I cant explain the depth and beauty of their works. And now I believe its time for me to shut up and let the music speak for itself Metal Obsessive Grade: 95% (Sometimes I wonder how you can rate passions) |
