In The Woods... - 'A return to the isle of men' - By C. Diamantis
This re-release was much expected by all the fans of the Norwegian band. The first five songs are the ones contained in the demo The Isle Of Men, originally released in 1993, the sixth is a pre-produced version of the song found on the debut album of the band and the last song is a re-recording of And All This which was released on the rehearsal/demo of the band back in 1993. Its easy to understand that since all the compositions found in here date back to the first steps of the band, as they cant be compared to their later works. Everything here is more primitive, much less melodic (since at that time the band played black metal) and with a not-so-good production. Nevertheless, the ideas found in all the songs can reveal that this band was definitely no ordinary band. Their difference from the rest of the black metal scene becomes even more apparent when someone reads the lyrics which have nothing to do with the ones used usually by other black metal bands of the period. Once again In The Woods showed that they were definitely ahead of their time. The songs are long and epic but definitely much more brutal than the songs they would compose later. Everyone must understand that this is a release basically for the die-hard fans of the band that couldnt find the very rare original demo version. The music of the band is very different from the style that made them a very important act in metal, but that doesnt mean that it lacks anything in quality, especially if we take into consideration that this is the first demo of the band. And, of course, the two bonus songs are very interesting (especially And All This). All who consider themselves fans of the band have already bought the album. As for the others, first buy everything else that this band has released and then get this. Metal Obsessive Grade: 75% |
