Down - 'II - A bustle in your hedgerow' - By C. Impey
"II" is Downs follow up to their 1995 album "NOLA", and after hearing this I'll soon be adding "NOLA" to my cd collection. Down play stripped down basic metal in a more old school style. "II" looks set to be one of the best albums of 2002 outclassing the vast amounts of arising nu-metal bands. At 15 tracks long this is excellent value for money, and if you've heard "NOLA" i'm sure it's worth the 7 year gap inbetween the albums. Down consist of members of Pantera, Corrosion Of Conformity, Crowbar and Eye Hate God, so if you've heard of any of those bands you might get some kind of idea what this sounds like if you mix them all together. The album starts with "Lysergik Funeral Procession", boasting a beefy metal riff this is one of the best songs on the album. Phil Ansemo sounds as brilliant as ever on vocals, with a sound that's similar to some of Pantera's slower songs. "There's Something On My Side" is another great track, but provides a dodgy moment when you realise that the riff sounds similar to Drowning Pool's "Bodies", but luckily the songs's nothing like that. "Man That Follows Hell" starts with frantic drumming and breaks into an old school type song, slightly faster than most of the the other tracks. God, here I go again, "Stained Glass Cross", another brilliant song, this one has a kind of groove to it. It's one of those songs that you can't help nodding your head to. Let's skip a few tracks (or one), trust me they're all good. "Learn From This Mistake" is a song about Ansemo's trouble with drugs. It's the first slower song, I suppose it's a simple metal ballad and it's very good. Similar tracks are "Where I'm Going", "Lies..." and "Landing On The Mountains of Meggido. These more mellow songs give the album a more varied feel. "II" contains 2 songs that kind of seem like they're there just to fill up the album, they're short instrumental tracks that don't really fit into the record. My favourite song from this album is track 7, "Beautifully Depressed", it's a great song and Ansemo sounds brilliant. Overall this is a superb album, most of the songs are amazing.
