Einstrzende Neubauten - 'Berlin babylon' - By J. Moulton
Legendary industrialists, Einsturzende Neubauten are back with their music for the soundtrack to the film Berlin Babylon. The opening track is very X-Files like in atmosphere and sets the tone for the rest of the CD. As the album progresses, more and more instruments are used per song, including the sound of helicopters flying overhead which really exploit the talents of surround sound technology. Elsewhere, the sound of factory-like precision hammering on metal is used as the standard percussion throughout the album. The vast majority of this CD is instrumental work as only two songs, Befindlichkeit and Die Befindlichkeit des Landes contain any lyrics at all. Track 5, Trauermarsch, has an extract of Beethoven's Symphony Number 3, which slowly gets turned into the tone of glass continually shattering. This is true German industrial music at its finest, and probably their most accessible work to date. Those of you who think that Rammstein are the only German band out there in the industrial category worth noting, then you are wrong. Neubauten have been creating noise for over two decades now, and they are still relatively unheard of. Which is a shame, as this CD, in my opinion, is one of the best CDs I have heard in a long, long time. Once you've got you head around what these German art-noise terrorists can do, it should open the door to some of their other defining moments. The fact that they are German, and sing in German, should not distract you from the fact that musically, this band is one of the finest to ever come from the industrial genre. This CD is so different to anything else you may ever hear, and it gets better and better with each listen. Quite possibly album of the year. Metal Obsessive Grade: 85% |
