The Site Question: What the hell is this I've stumbled upon? Answer: Metal Obsessive is a relatively small site with a simple design and simple staff, that specialises in providing well written reviews of records of almost ANY genre within rock and metal. Q: How, when and why exactly did you form? A: MO opened on Sunday, the 10th of February 2002. The site was completely my idea, though other reviews sites, such as SSMT and Sonic Death have inspired me alot. I guess I, like many other people, have always wanted to write reviews and put my opinions out to the 'masses'. Plus, I have always wanted to run my own popular website, (And have failed in doing so several times in the past) and finally I have got the chance. It was never part of the plan to have this many reviewers, or even to become this big (1400 hits in two months was certainly not what I expected)...I just offered a good friend, Michael Freeman a place as a reviewer here the same day we opened, and things just spiralled from there! Q: So what's the address to this stinkhole? A: The main 'index' page is located at http://www.geocities.com/MetalObsessive. Q: You mean it's on Geocities? Ugh! A: Personally, I'm quite fond of Geocities, small advertisements, easy site editing, though the large address can be a pain. There are plans for a '.com' domain to be purchased, but this means paying money, which I'm currently lacking in :). Q: Can I help you by donating money to the site? A: If you're crazy enough to want to make a cash donation to MO, feel free to mail me about it. This would in actual fact help the site majorly, as it would contribute towards us having no adverts, and a '.com' domain. Q: Can I help you in any other way? A: Sure! There's tons of ways to help. You can become a reviewer and send in reviews to MO on a regular basis, (Sign up at the Recruitment page). You can mail me suggestions you have about the site, or do even simpler things, like sign up and post occasionally on the message board. However, if you're too lazy to do any of this, then the best way you can help, is just by visiting the site, and letting other people know about it. Q: Can I link to you at my site/Can you link to my site at MO? A: Anything concerning links is answered over at the links page. Q: I would like to join you in your depressing, sad little 'webmaster' job at MO and become a 'Deputy webmaster', or do any other job not listed on the 'recruitment' page, what should I do? A: If the position you're after isn't on the recruitment page, then I'm not really interested in hiring you, but if you're really desperate, then e-mail me about it. Q: I'm about to hack into your site and destroy everything. Just thought I'd warn you! A: PLEASE don't hack us, or do anything else that would damage the site. Abuse is more than welcome, after all, everyone has different opinions, but please don't take it any further. Q: I'm incredibly stupid, and haven't noticed the infinite amount of links to your e-mail address throughout the site, but would like to contact you or one of your staff about something not answered here. A: Run along to the staff page, where every staff members' contact details are listed. The Reviews Question: Bah! How can I get to the reviews? Answer: Near to the bottom of the main page on the right when you enter, there is a list with links to all of the reviews that have been added over the last five updates, however, that just provides you with the most recently added reviews, to find the bulk list, you can find it seperated into four on the left hand menu bar. The reviews are listed in alphabetical order of the artist's name, therefore if you're looking for a review of 'At The Gates - Slaughter of the soul' you will find it nestled in the A-F section. Then, when you've found the review you'd like to read, simply click on the album title in the list, and the review should load up. When you've finished reading, but would like to browse more reviews, either press the back button in your browser, or continue to use the left menu bar to navigate the site. If a particular link does not work, there is either a problem with your internet, a problem with the site, or a broken link. If this does occur, please mail me the details. Q: But I can't find the review I'm looking for! A: Either you are misunderstanding the listing system (it really isn't too hard to understand) or we do not currently have the review you want (we can't review EVERYTHING you know). Why not head over to the message board and post a message requesting that we review the particular album you want. Q: So I can request you to review albums then 'eh? A: Certainly! Please remember that we try to keep with the rock and metal concept as often as possible, so no Spice Girls requests (DOH!) And I can't guarantee that we will review the album you want, either because none of our reviewers own the particular record, or because we just don't want to :). Q: Does this mean I can ask you to review my band's record, then? A: Sure, in fact, I enourage this! It's always great to hear band's actually wanting you to review they're work. Personally though, I will not buy an album just so I can review it, and I doubt any of my staff will either unless they have come across obscene wealth, so you're either going to have to send us a copy of the record, or have ALL the tracks available on mp3. Please e-mail me or the reviewer you want to rate your album if this appeals to you, then we'll have to discuss how exactly we are to get our grubby paws on your music. Q: But what if we're an underground band that nobody's heard of apart from my brother, girlfriend and some nerdy kid who fell upon our website and has adored the band ever since? A: This is fine too, even better in fact, as it gives me a tinge of pride to help get a small band heard of :). Q: How did you get all this information (Cover, Track Listing, Label etc...) about the album being reviewed? A: I usually use AMG to supply me with all the necessary details, however, if that doesn't list the band I want, then I will use the band's official website, fansites, music resource sites, or, if the worse comes to the worse, I will steal it off another reviews site :). I find all the sites mentioned using the google search engine. Q: And how did you get the addresses to the label and band's official sites'? A: As it says above, I use the google search engine. Q: Can I steal the information for my own site? A: Sure thing, I did the same to some other poor shmuck, so I guess I deserve it :P. Just don't steal the review. Q: I've found a mistake in the album details! EG. It was released in 1997, NOT 1998. A: If you are certain that I'm wrong and you're right, and you have something to back it up, then please e-mail me with the name of the review the mistake is in, and the mistake itself, and I will edit it as soona s possible. The same goes for broken links, errors and mistakes around the entire site. Q: What's this? You've starred out all the swear words? Are you some kind of censorship-nerd? A: Certainly not :). Though I don't really encourage it, I don't mind about swearing, or using other offensive words at all. However, my good old parents took it upon themselves to install a web-filtering system on my computer, preventing me from visitng any page with 'naughty words' on, therefore I need to star out any 'naughty words', so I can view my own web pages, nasty, 'eh? Q: Can I send in reviews to the site? A: Definitely! First however, you're going to need to go to the recruitment page and send me an application, then have it accepted before you start sending in reviews. At this time, only official staff members can send me reviews. Q: I'm not happy, in your review, you slagged off my favourite band! A: Amazingly, everyone's opinions are different. It is more than likely that you will disagree with a review. There is no need to get angry about it, just go to the message board and discuss it instead! Q: I've just bought a CD you gave 100%, and it sucks! A: See above question. However, I guess you can't discuss the fact that you've just wasted at least 10 on an album you hate. That's why I wouldn't suggest buying records purely because a review told you to, unless you have found that you're opinions are almost exactly the same as the particular reviewer. It's a good idea to compare reviews from MO with reviews from other sites to see what the popular opinion on a CD is. Or, even better, download a few tracks from the album provided in the track listing! Q: What's all this percentage grade malarkey about? A: This is a grade the reviewer has given the album out of 100%. Several people disagree with rating albums for different reasons, however, personally I think it gives you an even better perspective on the record, if the review can't quite manage it. Plus, it makes things easier when comparing albums. |
