Kirk learned to play the guitar on his brothers guitar whilst his brother was away at school. He had his first guitar at the age of 15. He was taught by the legendery Joe Satriani
Metallica discovered Kirk by listening to a tape done by the band Kirk was with, Exodus, and were impressed.
After Dave Mustaine was kicked out of the band, Kirk was asked to take his place.
Kirk is still with Metallica today, where they are still making music for all us metalheads.
