Why Read?
(c) Stephanie H.
We were four hours into the car ride to New York, and we still had five hours to go.  I was happily listening to my MP3 player, and Kevin and Daniel were playing their Game Boys.  The Game Boys were linked together with a cable, and I could hear the music from both ends.  I told both of them to turn down the volumes, but of course they didnt.  I turned up the volume on my MP3 player to drown them out.

I looked down at the little screen of my player and noticed that the battery sign said full.  I sighed.  The batteries in the little player didnt last very long, and it usually died within a half hour of the sign.  I decided to save the rest of the juice for another time.  I pulled the headphones out of my ears, carefully wrapped up the headphone cord, and put the player away in my purse.  I then leaned forward and opened my backpack.  I pulled out The Lord of the Rings, and opened to the bookmark.  I took out the bookmark and began to read.

I was still engrossed in my book an hour later, when all of a sudden I heard a wail from my younger brother.  The batteries in his Game Boy had just died, and Kevin hadnt brought any new ones for him to use.  He sat there, sulking, for about ten minutes.  Finally, I asked him if he wanted me to read to him, and he eagerly replied with a yes.

I placed my bookmark where I was, and flipped back to the beginning of the book.  Daniel leaned over my shoulder to try to read along with me, and he was soon engrossed just as much as I.  I read for two hours, until my throat began to feel dry.  I asked Daniel if it was okay if I stopped, and he frowned.  He wanted me to keep reading.

I put the book flap in the place where Daniel and I had left off and opened up a bottle of water.  I downed the entire bottle, and I felt a lot better.  I sat back and listened to the music for a few minutes, but I soon began to feel very bored.  Daniel appeared to be the same way.  He looked up to me and asked me if I would read some more, and I happily opened up the book once more.

About a half hour later, the batteries died in Kevins Game Boy as well.  He sat there, not knowing what to do, for a while.  I asked him if he had a book to read, and he said he hadnt brought one.  I laughed.

I then continued on reading to Daniel, until he fell asleep in his seat.  I quietly put the flap into the place a couple pages before where I had stopped, just in case he had fallen asleep a little while back.  I looked back to Kevin, who was looking rather bored.  I asked him why he wasnt playing his Game Boy Advance, since his Game Boy had died, and he said that he was sick of playing video games.  I smiled, and opened to where I was in my book, with a comment of how he should have brought a book of his own.

An hour later, we arrived at my Nana and Papas house, and my mother had to call my name three times to get my attention and get me out of the car.
