| About merseyA |
| MerseyA is a couple of webpages put together as an anarchist resource. At the moment there are contact details for independent anarchist groups and social centres. Neither of these resources is complete, so if you know of groups or centres that can be added then mail me using the link above. The thinking behind the lists is that the British anarchist movement has many resources but often we don't use them as constructively as we could. Local independent anarchist groups have real potential as an entry point for people attracted to anarchist ideas. While people may be put off by travelling long distances to a conference or bookfair, a local group which meets regularly can seem less intimidating. While national federations have their place, organising at grassroots level in our local communities means local independent organisation. Social Centres are free spaces created by, and for, people in the local community. They are autonomous zones where the basic anarchist principles of mutual aid and voluntary cooperation can be moved beyond the realm of mere words and ideas to become something more concrete rooted in local communities. Centres can range from a cafe and meeting/info area to larger multi-purpose spaces opened up for all parts of the community to use as they see fit. From creating cooperative methods of food distribution, reclaiming back our land and buildings, to new forms of community resistance to the daily assault by the state, capital, and their fascist helpers. The list of Social Centres is growing. If there's one in your area then get in touch; call in and see what's going on. If there isn't one locally then why not create your own? Both the Advisory Service for Squatters and Aspire in Leeds can offer sound advice on reclaiming buildings. If you're concerned about the day to day stuff then why not contact one of the centres and see if they can offer some practical advice based on their own experiences. |
