February 25, 2004 - From Ms. Mary to AB: I like the rain, too, and I like my bears . . . but I don't like wet bears -- there's just something so sad and lonely about wet fur. I could take a blow dryer to them after they were out in a rain, but it would take all night to get all of them dry. Oh, that brings back memories of cold January nights and early calves . . . in the house on the farm in Minnesota . . . where there's a rug on the kitchen floor and a big wet newborn calf on the rug is trying to stand up on his wobbly legs and my farmer husband is holding him steady . . . and me with the blow dryer kneeling beside the rug at 3 a.m. trying to get the calf warm and dry so he can go back outside to his momma for some warm first milk. We didn't have much money, and each calf would bring us $400 cash in the fall when the feedlot buyer came around. |
