Description of Terms:
1. dam's name: _________________________________________
Name of puppy's mother.
2. sire's name: _________________________________________
Name of puppy's father.
3. registered litter number: _______________________________
The breeder of the dam, who is either the owner of the mother dog (the bitch) or the
person who leased her, usually owns the litter and registers the litter with their kennel
name prefix.
4. AKC:
The American Kennel Club, a dog registry association.
5. AS A PET ONLY:
Most puppies are sold as pets only, meaning they are not to be exhibited in dog shows or
used for breeding. This term is not indicative of the quality of the puppy, only the
purpose.
6. PROOF OF ALTERATION:
Breeders want to be certain that only the very best specimens of the breed are bred, and
only under very carefully controlled and limited situations. Spaying or neutering is
required. The breeder will advise at what age this should be performed.
7. NEVER to allow this puppy out doors unless leashed.
Most breeders require the puppies that they have raised with such love and attention never
be allowed to roam the neighborhood.
8. NEVER to breed this puppy.
Most puppies are sold with a spay/neuter agreement. Breeders select breeding animals and
situations very carefully. Planned breeding programs are designed to produce healthy,
loving dogs and to avoid contributing to the pet overpopulation problem. Responsible
breeders are fiercely dedicated to improving their breeds and devote much time and energy
to exhibiting and raising their pedigreed dogs.
9. The Breeder agrees that this puppy is presently free of disease.
A contract is a two-way street. This is your guarantee that you are purchasing a healthy
animal. You should insist that this clause be written into every puppy sales contract.
10. This puppy will be accepted by Breeder with a full refund of purchase price if
returned within 72 hours of the date of this contract with a veterinarian's certificate
that this puppy has a health problem:
72 hours is a reasonable amount of time to observe the health and personality of a puppy
and to take him to your veterinarian for a health checkup.
11. Breeder reserves the right to consent to the sale or gift of this puppy to any
person other than Buyer.
Since the Breeder is selling the puppy to you, the Breeder wants to make sure that any
third party receiving the puppy will respect the terms and conditions of the contract.
12. Pet Quality:
Pet Quality puppies are the same healthy puppies as Show Quality puppies, but are not
qualified for show competition for one or more reasons. These reasons have to do mainly
with esthetics, as to how the puppy conforms to breed standards of perfection, such as
size or placement of the ears, the length of the body, color or pattern, etc. These slight
imperfections are rarely apparent to the untrained observer.
13. Breeder/Show Quality:
This is probably a puppy that the Breeder feels would not shine in the show ring, but that
has enough good features that place it just under Show Quality. It's an "almost"
Show Quality puppy.
14. Show Quality:
It is important to note that "Show Quality" means, "to the best of the
Breeder's knowledge at the time of purchase", since puppies do not always develop as
expected. However, Show Quality means the Breeder feels that the puppy has the temperament
and close confirmation to the breed standard that is required in the show ring. Of course,
Show Quality can mean different things to different Breeders.
15. Top Show Quality:
A Top Show puppy is rarely sold as a pet or even to a beginner interested in entering the
dog fancy Top show puppies are usually sold with the agreement that they will be shown a
certain amount and are often "co-owned" with the Breeder.
