| She found her father eventually,in one of the flets used for storing weapons. She curtsied politely to him, knowing it was a good way to improve his mood but irritated nontheless by loathsome courtesies that seemed to achieve nothing other than to waste her time. "My father!I must know, who is Elenglinel!"she spoke urgently, moving forward "What?Lalaithwen child,do not trouble me with foolish games today..I have not the mood for them" "Nay,speak not to me as were I a young child distracting thee with my games! You know of what I speak,it is written in your eyes"she spoke passionately as she always did,but now there was a hint of command and authority in her voice that Hitharlin had never heard there before. He wanted to deny it,for in their hearts he and his wife knew that the fates of their two daughters were entwined and it brought them no joy.Hitharlin wished only to protect Lalaithwen from that evil which his instincts told him would coe upon her.,he could not however, lie to her;it was not the way of elves to decieve others, nor could he do so anyway with her emerald eyes holding his own. "Lalaithwen, she is gone..this morning she left.It will avail you not to know of her past" Lalaithwen was now confused, releasing her fathers eyes she thought hard,Elenglinel was gone and yet the shadow remained!Could she be wrong? No,something in her heart told her she was correct, but she didnt understandat all.Raising her eyes once more she pressed her father "Tell me!" He could notcould not tell her.His thoughts went back to the bright day on which he had found her,an elven maiden more beautiful than any he had known. He had love her then, wanted to protect her though he did not know what from. But there was another thing.none knew it but he himself, when he had gone alone ahead to see if the elf-child had been pursued,a voice a powerful, beautiful voce had called to himIt had told him to take the child, and it had told him much more besidesit had told him of another child that had replaced their young daughter even as they spoke,a child of darkness the voice had said,it had called Lalaithwen the child of light and spoken of their destiny:one would slay the other and determine the fate of all Middle Earth. He had tried to protect them, both of them, tried to forget the terrible predictions, the claim that Elenglinel ws not his child..but he could not.And now, fate had caught up with them.Elenglinel had hated Lalaithwen all her life,he knew that well, this morning he awoke to find her gone and his heart grieved despite himself.. Suddenly he returned to the present dragged out of thoughts of the past,Lalaithwen was staring at him;her bewitching eyes were wide with shock and with a start he realised he had spoken aloudnow there was no going back. Her foster father called her name desperately as she swept from the room, his call--his plea was so full of pain, hurt and dreadful, soul gnawing guilt that she nearly stopped--nearly went back, talked to him, comforted him.smiled.and with her faint glow light up the darkness in his heart. She didnt stop, she had set determination up around her like an impenetrable shield, she had only one thought running through her mind, pushing out the chorus of voices, the waves of confused thoughts racing through her brain, I have to find Elenglinel..I have to stop her. She knew somewhere in the mass of tangled thoughts that her mind had become that Elenglinel was destroying their home,Elenglinel didnt need to be there to do it,and Lalaithwen knew that she was the only one who could stop her,and that was what she was going to have to dowhatever the cost. |
