There are many ways to make a maze, but it always starts with an idea! These are some pictures from our 2003 maze, "100 Years of Flight." The first step is sketching a plan. Using an outline of the shape of the field, a design is drawn.
Second, the entire field is plowed, harrowed, and then planted with corn.
Third, the sketched plan is transferred onto the field. Once the corn is growing (so you can see if there are any blank patches that might force a change to the plan), the plan is drawn out on the field using lime or by scratching it in with a rake. ...until it looks just right!
Fourth, plastic is unrolled over the markings to create the paths that create the design.
A shovel of dirt is placed every several feet to hold the plastic down in the wind. The plastic is removed before the maze is opened. The future path you see here is part of the 1903 Wright Flyer. -->
On July 6th, when the corn was (can you guess?) about knee high, the maze looked like this. A picture taken at the end of August can be seen on the home page. And when you come and visit, we'll show you some close up!
Fifth, you go flying and see how it looks!
