Maggie Hayes’ Snap and Miss Trip the red dawgs and I had at the Carolina Australian Shepherd Club's obedience trials on July 21 in Mebane, NC. There were two trials in one day. Snap is working on his ASCA OTCh so I had him entered in Open B and Utility B in both trials. Just for grins and giggles, I decided to drop Miss Trip into Novice B to see what she could do! Well, the little bitch worked a 200 her first time in the ring and earned her first High in Trial! Not to be outdone, Snapper won both OB and UB and took High Combined. In trial two, Snap won Open and Trip won Novice with a 198 1/2 earning her second High in Trial. She turns one on July 26! The red dawgs worked five first places, two HITs, one HC and had six perfect heeling scores! I am blessed and honored to be their partner! Hmmmm, I think maybe Trip is aptly named...this is going to be an Incredible Journey, indeed!

Lynne has always had a soft spot for Labrador Retrievers, and was asked to show Ch Holland's Rhythm N Blues, an awesome black dog. They took Best of Breed honors both days at Chesapeake, and Lynne is anxiously awaiting a litter, due May 11th, sired by this magnificent young male. She has her fingers crossed for a black boy, out of the lovely yellow bitch, Ch Canvasback's Looking for Quakers. Lynne will continue to special "Otis" at upcoming shows, and will hopefully be back in the Labrador ring with her new puppy. What an Awesome April!!!

The tester called him "a natural" saying that he was very biddable: responsive to guidance, readily adjusts and did everything asked of him. Tester also said that he had good balance and a medium eye. So it looks like sheep are in Ben's future!

Dolly Wright’s Saylor was entered in ASCA trials is MD. She earned her ATDc (Advanced Trial Dog - Cattle) title as well as her Open Trial Dog titles on sheep and ducks. But best of all, Saylor was High Combined Other Breed winning some very nice prizes plus a huge, silver belt buckle. Not to be outdone by her daughter and figuring she better get some more initials after her name or she'd be replaced, Spring earned her third Open leg and CDX title, finally, at the Gloucester Kennel trials Memorial Day Weekend. Then the third weekend of June my collies and I traveled to PA for another round of ASCA trials. What a weekend! Saylor earned on Saturday her Advanced title on sheep, with a first place, and HIT Other Breed. She also had a very nice score in advanced ducks. Sunday we just needed to qualify in Advanced ducks again and we'd have our WTCH (Working Trial Champion)!!! Of course the pressure was on and Saylor was pumped and the ducks weren't as cooperative as on Saturday. Even though Saylor got the warning, "WATCH IT!" from the judge because of a weee pounce on a duck, we qualified with a HIT Other Breed again. And that was our WTCH. What a LUCKY DUCKY DAY!!! Saylor is now: WTCH Sunnyside's Wind in My Sails HSAdsc, ATDdsc, CGC, TDI.

He was the smallest (shortest) dog doing the vertical, but boy can that yellow dawg jump!! He did a 5’ jump up to release the bumper from the extended bar. Rachel Springer’s Squirt (CH Cabochon Red Corvette of Raestan) earned his Ch March 23 in Raleigh NC. When I got Squirt three and one half years ago for a Christmas present for my husband, he was to be a “Pet”. I lived in Virginia Beach and enrolled him in an obedience class in Virginia Beach. I had such a good time I enrolled him in agility in Chesapeake because of Lynda Fairchild’s insistence I enrolled in MDTC advanced obedience where he earned his Companion and Therapy Dog Certificates. Again, with Lynda’s insistence I began to show Squirt. I also enrolled him in conformation because I needed it and agility because it was so much fun for Squirt and I. After the judge in Virginia Beach gave Squirt a 4 pt major, she told me my dog was Magnificent but I was a lousy handler. After the show, I asked the judge what I did wrong. I explained to her that my friends told me “this was a handlers show, and not to expect anything” I also told her I was in school for conformation. The judge's advice was to “pay no attention to my friends and more attention to my dog”. Thanks to Lynda Fairchild’s encouragement, Pat Harris, Jim and Wendy Swimme’s advice Squirt now has his Championship.

Mary Ann Mullen’s Jetson (the Tibetan Spaniel) got his last CD leg and a fourth place at the Skyline Shows. He also in the same weekend got two Rally Excellent legs. He was EXTREMELY lucky he qualified on Saturday under a wonderful Rally Judge Sandy Walroth but had 3 extra points to spare, so it was close. Jetson's Mom is still surprised at how much fun she is having training this little dog. Then at the Richmond shows Jetson (the Tibetan Spaniel) completed his Rally Excellent title. I have only had Jetson one year and he got his Rally Novice, Advanced, and Excellent titles as well as his AKC Novice Obedience title (CD). The Foo Foo little dog is not only a lovable little dog, but smart too!! So much for my mis-conception that little dogs were just for cuddling!!!

He came within one handler error of a utility leg too. My little pom girl, Wenkest Jewel, took her third novice rally leg to finish her RN with a score of 100 in Novice B. Unfortunately there were six 100 scores and her legs (the ones she has four of already) were too short to get a fast enough time to place. HOWEVER, Jewel did also take her third leg in novice B to earn her CD. She got her CD and RN on the same day! I call this a very good day!!!!!!

Kelly Hair’s Aodhán completed his CD title. I know most who have attended classes with us at MDTC will find this unbelievable, but Merry Dancers’ Aodhán McAston, aka Aodhán the Irish Terrorist (Terrier), finished his CD title at three consecutive shows 21-23 APR 06. On Friday 21 April 06, he won first place in the Novice A competition at the Columbia Terrier Association trial in West Friendship, MD, he was also highest score in both Novice A&B with a score of 190. Mrs. Nancy K. Withers was the judge. What made the win remarkable was that during the down, the Cairn Terrier that was next to Aodhán decided to get up and stand over his nose. Aodhán did not move at all even when the Cairn’s handler came over and picked her up, Aodhán stayed in the down position with his head to the floor and did not flinch, the judge told me it was the one of the most amazing down stays she had ever seen! On Saturday, Aodhán also had a great trial at the Old Dominion Show. All of the Irish Terrier breeders who were at the conformation show came over to cheer us on (I think most were amazed that I had trained an Irish Terrier in obedience and wanted to see if it was really true!). We were the only terrier in the Novice competition. Aodhán placed third out of eleven. He was beaten by a Doberman and a Pointer. But would have scored enough points for first place if it hadn’t been for the Tibeten Terrier special in the next ring finishing and the crowd clapping at the very moment Aodhán was doing the recall exercise. When he heard the clapping he turned around to see what was going on and then stacked in a perfect show pose (as if to say, yes I am beautiful), the judge, Mrs. Jean Porter Lynch, then remarked, “My husband is Irish, so I understand that!” however, she docked us 5 points anyway and we ended up with a 187.5, (the margin between the winner and us was only 3 points). On Sunday, we were at the same location with the Baltimore Kennel Club, the first thing the judge, Mr. Harold Doan, said to me when we went into the ring was, “unusual breed you chose to train obedience, I’ve never qualified an Irish Terrier before.” We had another great run and qualified with a score of 184.5 , despite my many handling errors. We placed 5th out of 14 dogs and Aodhán received his AKC Companion Dog Obedience Title and solidly convinced the judge that an Irish Terrier can do obedience! Thanks to all at MDTC, especially Marilyn and Meg for helping me train Aodhán.
Lisa Hundley's Casey (AKC/UKC Ch Quail Run's Eager To Flirt, RN) got her first two Rally Noivce legs at the Richmond Dog Obedience Trials Easter weekend.
