Recommended reading:
1. Medical School Admission Requirements (MSAR). (2004-2005 edition) This book is published yearly by the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) and is a MUST read for every pre-med student!! Make sure you have read this book BEFORE you take the MCAT and begin applying!
2. Becoming a Physician: A Practical and Creative Guide to Planning a Career in Medicine by Jennifer Danek and Marita Danek. This is written by a medical student and her mother and contains a lot of GREAT advice for pre-meds.
3. Getting Into Medical School Today 4th edition. by Scott Plantz, et al. Another good book for pre-meds containing information about declaring a major, extracurricular and volunteer activities, pre-med track, MCAT, AMCAS, interview process, general medical school curriculum, etc.
4. Preparing for Medical School by Shailer Petersen. This is an old book (1980), but it contains a lot of valuable information related to a career as a physician. This is in our library.
5. The Yale Guide to Careers in Medicine & the Health Professions: Pathways to Medicine in the Twenty-first Century Edited by Robert M. Donaldson, Jr., Kathleen S. Lundgren, Howard M. Spiro. A thick book filled with detailed information about careers in medicine and other health professions. United Hospice of Macon is a palliative care organization that takes care of the terminally ill and their families. Hospice focuses on a holistic approach to treating a patient. Some of our members have volunteered for Hospice in the past and found it to be a very meaningful and worthwhile experience! You can contact:
Lisa Chapman
Please feel free to ask Lisa ANY questions that you have about Hospice and/or if you are interested in volunteering. You must complete a 2-3 hour training session first before you can begin volunteering. You create your own work schedule each month and provide your own transportation. Lisa is VERY flexible and willing to work with your busy class schedules!! Volunteering for Hospice is an EXCELLENT way to gain patient exposure and see a different approach to medicine.
