I always thought that my destiny was with the Church, preaching the word of
God to parishioners, helping people, creating a better place, even if it is only in one
small parish. But then Derek happened. And just like that, my entire belief system
changed. And here I am, still serving God, but in a different battle. And my allies
are not fellow priests, but my family. Derek, Alex and Julia.
Derek has this gift, a way with people. He inspires loyalty, without trying, it
seems. But this may be about to change. You'd think he might have learned, after
Christmas a few years back. Derek, wanting the traditional Christmas mass,
complete with sermons. Alex wanting to attack the mass of presents under the tree.
I'll give it to Derek, he seemed to learn quickly. Never tempt Alex with a single
bone if you don't have the entire carcass ready and waiting for her. It's what makes
her so brilliant in research, she grabs hold of a clue and dives in until she has all the
answers she wants.
Julia used to tease her constantly, and I must admit, I have been party to
more than one of her little conspiracies, the whispered conversations which broke
off as Alex entered the room, purposely designed to arouse her curiosity to get a
bite. Derek, too, I think, did it on occasion, giving her not quite all the information
he had on a topic, to see what she would come up with. But this time, I think he did
it without thinking. He casually informed us that we would be having a house guest
for a while. I could feel the electricity as Alex's brain clicked into high gear. I must
admit though, this visitor has got me curious also. I don't think that Derek has ever
mentioned him before, but his name sticks in my mind. Nicholas Boyle. Oh well.
I'm sure I'll find out Derek's little plan when he gets here. Or, when Alex finds out
and spills it to us.
