Notes to myself:

1.) Re: Dylan Rayne - Could find no evidence of there being a crew list for Drake's voyage to St. Augustine.

* * *Needs follow-up letter to inquire about Dr. Rayne's source of info.* * *

* * *A thought: check Devonshire records for Dylan - all those seafaring families: Drake, Granville, Hawkins, Gilberts, Raleighs were interrelated - I wonder??* * *

2.) Re: Parish of Rayne, Co. Essex - established 1558 - 1 3/4 mi west of Braintree - archdiocese = Middlesex - diocese = London (Frank Smith, A Genealogical Gazetteer of England (Genealogical Publishing Co.: Baltimore, MD, 1987), p. 428. Also shows a nearby village named Raynham.

* * *Check records of Prerogative Court of Canterbury for wills - at PRO, Kew Gardens - records begin 1384 (printed index for prior to 1700).* * * ;-)

* * *Check Co. Records Office, Chelmsford - some Essex parishes under jurisdiction of Commissary Court of London - begin 1400 - indexed* * * ;-)

* * *Essex also has Quarter Session Rolls beginning in 1556* * *

3.) Bland, Edward, Discovery of New Brittaine reprint 1966 by Readex Microprint Corp. for Great Americana Series.

* * * Must find a copy of this* * *

4.) Re: Thos. m. Christina

* * *Yey!!!! Dutch Reformed Church records for New Amsterdam- couldn't be better ! ! ! - Also, records of Henrico Co., VA - good!!!!* * *

5.) Re: Horse races @ Bermuda Hundred (excellent discussion in Wm. & Mary Quarterly (Vol. 2, 1894), pp. 294-295.

6.) Re: Chamberlayne - see: W&M Qtrly (V. 22, 1915), p. 158. He seems to have been in trouble with others besides Thos. Rayne. Seems to have been related to Abr. Wood, mentioned by Dr. Rayne.

7.) * * *Find map showing route of Ochaneechee Path & check to see if records of the period exist for schools in Leiden* * *

8.) Re: Adawehi - this seems to have been more of a title, "Conjurer," than a given name. Discussed by Woodward in The Cherokees (Univ. of OK Press, 1963). Male or female with mystical, prophetic powers, secret magics, in charge of fire, tribal historians, opinions well regarded in tribal councils.

9.) Re: Conisca - mentioned in Swanton, Indian Tribes of N.Amer. (Smithsonian Inst. Press, 1984), p. 218.

10.) Fr. Magín de Catalá (arr. at Mission Sta. Clara in 1784; d. 1830) appears to have been noted for his visionary powers. Made many very public predictions. (Discussed in Broulé, Mission Sta. Clara de Asís [Bk. 8 in The Missions: California's Heritage Series] & in the CA Missions: a Pictorial History [Sunset Books, Menlo Pk, CA], p. 169)

* * *Check Sta. Clara mission records - it's possible some family members drifted that way - also check missions at San Rafael [much closer to A.I. than Dolores] & Sonoma* * *

11.) Pretty accurate description of Micheltorena. ;-)

12.) Tons of records on the Yorba family in Orange Co., CA (formed from LA Co. in 1889 - Nixon Library is at Yorba Linda).

* * *Can find no link, but it's a big coincidence - check - seem to recall the Yorbas were related to Gen. Patton????* * *

* * As to remainder since 1850 or so - usual stuff - censuses, newspapers, etc.* *
