Dr. Derek Rayne Death in Angel Island Holocaust
to be Ruled Suicide
By Kelly Yu
Staff WriterSAN RAFAEL - An anonymous source has reported that a death certificate will be issued Monday in Marin County for Dr. Derek Rayne. The well-known, local philanthropist has been missing and presumed dead since a November 12 explosion, which destroyed his home and the headquarters of the Luna Foundation, of which he was executive director.
According to our confidential informant, a county coroner's inquest has determined that Dr. Rayne was solely responsible for triggering the conflagration that destroyed the landmark structure and took his own life.
The inquest has also reportedly concluded that Dr. Rayne committed suicide while in a state of emotional and mental instability brought on by financial pressures, with a possible contributing factor of a delayed stress reaction to the death of his father, which he had witnessed as a child.
It is known that the Luna Foundation has within the past six months made funding commitments to several academic and research endowments and grant programs, as well as three local religious institutions and an Oakland hospice. It is as yet unknown what affect this ruling may have upon Dr. Rayne's arrangements for his own considerable personal estate or upon these and other recent decisions he may have made on behalf of the Luna Foundation and the Winston Rayne Hall of Antiquities, of which he was the founder.
