Dear Rachel,
Within the week my attorney will call upon you to discuss a trust fund established for Kat, and for yourself. It should be more than enough to enable Kat to do whatever she wishes to do with her life. Mr. Hewitt is a good man, whom you may trust implicitly.
I hope I got the chance to say good-bye, but somehow I doubt it. Therefore, know that I always respected you as a scientist and a friend, that I cared for you, and that my House was made all the more formidable by your presence. A part of me is sorry that I dragged you into the world of the Legacy, but the truth is that you were, unknowingly, already a part of that world. I am sorry for that, but it was a destiny conceived long before you or I were born.
I know that you believe, you hope, that you have come to grips with your family's heritage. You hope that you have subdued the tiger and caged it forever, both for yourself and Kat. I hope so, too, but I fear it will not be so easily accomplished. It is a part of you as surely as your chromosomes are a part of you. If it "offends thee," you cannot, as the Matthew says, "pluck it out and cast it from thee." Despite what you have witnessed, what you have endured, and what you yourself have done in order to save your daughter, you will return to the safety of science. You feel secure in a world that you can qualify and quantify, where diseases, brain chemicals, and emotional disorders explain all. Beware lest the Darkside use that against you, for it will try again and again. As I have warned Kat, so I warn you.
Look to your heart, where your conscience lies, not your brain that rationalizes away both good and evil. Your innermost soul will tell you the truth - listen.
Your way is similar to both Philip's and to my sister, Ingrid's. Both seek solace and refuge in their faith. You seek it in science and normal everyday life. However, you all tread dangerous paths. If your refuge is shaken, if its foundations crumble, you will be lost. Philip, I fear, hides in his faith. I hope he finds the pure way of an enlightened warrior that my sister has. To my shame, I did not recognise her strength for a very long time, but now I can recognise the difference between her faith and Philip's, and yours. Ingrid's foundations are strong in the way of passive attack, like Gandhi, and she knows her "gifts" for what they are - both a strength and a weakness. Holy ground and faith are her sanctuaries to protect her "powers" from subversion and misuse, both by the Darkside and by herself.
Only by seeing your own "power" for what it is and by seeing evil for what it is - insidious, delicious, beckoning, cloaked in innocence, and a beast within us all - will you ever be able to protect yourself and Kat. You need not use your "gift" yourself, but know that it is there and can be used by others against your will. (So many euphoniums, "heritage," "gift," "power," "talent," all for something we cannot truly define. It becomes tiresome.)
I chose long ago to become a knight, a protector of the innocent, in the battle of Light and Dark. I would not be a pawn, and from the moment of my birth, I was never an innocent. I pray that I went down as a knight worthy of the title. You must choose your own way to fight, be it science or something else, but God did not grant you innocence any more than he did me. Destiny does exist, but how we meet it is our own choice.
Therefore, be strong. Find certainty in your heart. Do not listen to the voices of indecision and doubt. Doubt is a chink in the armour that those who carry our "gifts" cannot afford. Instill that certainty in Kat. They will try again. Be on forever your guard.
With much affection, your friend,
