. . .A Christmas Protest. . .
It was Christmas at Hogwarts, and the castle was decorated to the hilt. Everyone was worried about Voldemort's return, so Dumbledore decided to spread holiday spirit to keep morale up. Each professor was assigned a different part of the castle to decorate, though some did it more willingly than others (no one was ever able to convince Snape that bats weren't proper holiday decor).
Professor Flitwick was given charge of decorating the entrance hall, which he attacked with gusto. For two weeks, the students wondered what was going on behind the charmed curtains which hid the diminutive professor's decorations. Occasionally, they could hear his squeaky voice declaiming strange sounding charms. For a few days, the fear of Voldemort was ignored in favor of speculation about the Charms professor.
On Christmas morning, the curtains were still up, which confused and bemused the students. Every other professor had finished their work well before Christmas day for the students to enjoy. Though students questioned him all day, all Professor Flitwick would do was beam. Some students tried to stay up all night, awaiting the grand unveiling; the prefects managed to send them back into their dormitories before anything happened.
There were a number of early risers the next morning, and plenty of shoving on the moving staircases as everyone tried to be the first to see Professor Flitwick's surprise. As the Gryffindor Sixth Years entered the entrance hall, they were amazed to see the entire Twelve Days Of Christmas laid out in its splendor before them. Some of the exhibits were entirely made of charms, while others were a combination of charms and real wildlife.
Harry and Ron were absolutely thrilled to see geese laying golden eggs, and flirtatious maids milking placid cows. Lavender and Parvati hurried over to see the five golden rings, encrusted with gems. While everyone else oohed and aahed over Professor Flitwick's amazing display, Hermione stood and steamed. Finally, face red and hair flying, she stomped over to Professor Flitwick, who was arranging the four cooing calling birds.
"Professor Flitwick, are all these birds real?"
"Why, yes, Miss Granger. Why do you ask?" The diminutive man asked.
"I don't think it's fair to use real turtle doves in this exhibit. Don't you know they're on the red list for endangered British birds?"
Over in a far corner, Harry and Ron snickered. Ron shook his head. "Figures Hermione would find something to protest at Christmas!"
