Hogwarts is not merely a building, created from stone and mortar. It is a living, breathing creature, which is not content without occupants. It is the complete opposite of the Shrieking Shack, which despises those lodged beneath its roof.

The stones of Hogwarts were coaxed up from the ground, to be surrounded by magic and to grow with the powers of those within. Each of the founders - Godric Gryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw, Salazar Slytherin and Helga Hufflepuff - placed some of their magic into the half-constructed castle, to make the stones live and sing.

Hogwarts grows, in slow, mysterious ways; over the years new rooms sprout and grow without human interference, in response to need and desire, and on occasion, requirement. Only the most astute staff and students ever notice, and the headmasters and mistresses merely smile as the castle groans into a new configuration.

The halls of Hogwarts are decorated by the humans who live there, and harbor more than merely insects and rodents. Ghosts are born there, to wander freely throughout the school, to instruct the students with their timeless wisdom; creatures, too, though they are regarded more with fear than with respect.

Hogwarts would die if it were left alone, crumble into the ruins which muggle tourists see. It needs the magic and life force contained within, a symbiotic relationship with developing witches and wizards. Each student that enters the halls of Hogwarts leaves a piece of themselves behind, whether it is tangible, like a statue or trophy, or intangible, like the ghosts and portraits which dot the halls.

The inhabitants of Hogwarts are numerous and transitory, but they each entrust something of themselves to the halls which harbored them.

Hogwarts is the whole of its parts, built by the impressions left behind.
