Time Turner

. . .Conclusions. . .

At some point, Harry thinks, he will become as wise as Dumbledore and stop jumping to the obvious conclusion. He prefers to think that this is caused by youth and not some innate flaw; that, in the future, he will be able to think things through with a clear mind, free from assumption and prejudice.

Take his first year at Hogwarts. Who would have thought that Quirrel, of all people, would be in collusion with Voldemort? Poor, stuttering Quirrel scared of everything, who would faint if you said 'boo' to him?

No, Harry thought it was Snape, in his eleven-year-old mind a safe assumption, because Snape didn't like him, and therefore must be the cause of everything awful in his life. Too bad it's far more complicated than that, but complications are far away in a young mind, where the answer lies at the end of the straightest line.

It was the same his second year, thinking sniveling Draco Malfoy was the Heir of Slytherin, because who else could it be? It had to be some horrible pureblooded fiend who took delight in the pain of those he considered lesser than himself. Instead, it was Ginny, who was suckered in by the thought of a friend and captured by the brain of a madman.

His third year, his fourth, all filled with stupid thoughts, stupid plans, stupid conclusions that were always wrong. He couldn't pick the true villain to save his life - or to save others' lives. Poor Cedric, dead because the famous Harry Potter was too stupid to figure out who the real bad guy is.

And now? Stupid Harry, thinking he'll be so clever, thinking he can save everyone else, because this time, this time he's figured out Voldemort's plan. Wrong again, and this time it's Sirius who pays the price for Harry's foolishness.

Maybe someday he'll be smart enough to find a way to bring him back.

Maybe someday he'll be smart enough to know that death is final.

In the meantime, Harry covers the mirror.
