| As ever it was a grand do. Fish
and chips at Aldeburgh, lots of golf, splendid food and
good company - who could ask for anything more. We don't usually have a 'man of the tour', but this year we had one outstanding performer. Colin Edge not only won the Tour Trophy and the Bill Cook Trophy - but also the Alan Parkes' quiz (actually he was Captain of a four man team, but contribution from the others was insignificant). He is seen above receiving his ex-captain's tie from skipper Tom Woods. Andrew Wyatt came close to Colin. He won the green jacket on Day 2, nearest the pin in two on Day 3 and joint third for the Tour Trophy. But best of all he got a hole-in-one on the 2nd hole - seen above with his witnesses, Colin and David Baker. Many thanks to Tom Woods for three great days, to Mervyn Cooke for the competitions, to Tony Oakes for organising the bookings, to Peter Wildblood for ensuring our finances and to Alan Parkes for his quiz, not forgetting our photographers - Mickey Breedon and Andrew Wyatt . |

| An excellent away-day. The weather was exceptional, the course in good condition, the company great, the golf good, bad and very ugly*, the food was generally up to Haverhill's standard - some thought the sweet was only adequate. Anyway we all enjoyed it thoroughly - many thanks to Mervyn for organising the competition and, of course, to Colin for being our captain. | ||

| This year's French tour was from the 16th to18th September, a bit earlier than last year, in fact it has crept earlier each year since 2002 (held in the first week of October). This time we used the ferry because of the Channel Tunnel fire. Not so effective in terms of speed and convenience - but we did have the opportunity of a full English breakfast. The weather was excellent and in consequence the golf was marginally better for some of us. The Manoir Hotel did us proud. Many thanks are due to Peter Wildblood for organising the tour, to Mervyn Cooke for arranging the competitions and to Colin Edge for his captaincy. |

| PUTTING COMPETITION AT LE MANOIR |
![]() |
| After some amazing and some abysmal puts, just two contenders are left. Peter Howarth goes first, his ball stopping woefully short, Derek Buxton has an easy put to win the money - but his ball hits Peter's closer to the hole. Sacre bleu. |
| LE MANOIR DINNERS | |
| The two dinners were superb - four splendid courses with delightful l'amuse bouches. For my taste the oustanding dishes were the two starters: the warm escalope of fried duck liver on rosemary French toast on the first night, and the salmon tartar with Normandy oysters with a red onion and balsamic dressing on the second night. But then looking back at the menus all the dishes were just as delicious. Good value for the money. The wines selected by Peter Shawdon were just right and the service was exceptional - bread rolls in abundance for our skipper. | |

| ROOM 23 | |
![]() |
|
| Wiktor and Jim's customary pre-dinner drinks on the second day was held in room 23 - not a patch on Peter Wildblood's magnificent suite last year, but nevertheless it was an intimate squeeze. Peter Shawdon supplemented the malt whiskies with some fine red wines. |

finest weather ever and with the surprise visit of Ken

|
| So here
we are again, welcomed at Aldburgh by gorgeous weather
and superb fried fish and chips (some also with mushy
peas) and flocks of gulls.Wine from Wiktor (grand crue
Chablis), Jim (New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc), Andrew
(Chardonnay - de Bourgonge) and Peter P. (something
unknown but very tasty) complemented the feast. Then off to the hotel, but some of us were not able to check in because rooms were not ready. So we were all on the first tee in plenty of time for our early afternoon tee-off. Altogether about 30 of us with one junior apprentice and six country member venerables, going off of in a mixture of threes and fours - some in buggies, some with trollies and a smattering of stalwarts carrying. The course was in good nick - but as challenging as ever with cruel gorse, stubbly heather and unforgiving bunkers (it makes one realise how lucky we are at Heydon Grange). Sadly the pigs alongside the 11th have gone - the way of all flesh?. Well hung-over, Peter Pirie and Dave Watts left us the next morning because of their Czech Republic committment. With one or two exceptions the golf was not as good as the weather which was superb for all three days. The stats given below give no indication of the dramas experienced by the not-so-silent majority who laboured in vain with the terrain, bunkers and greens which defied all reasonable efforts to sink putts. But it was the apres golf at Thorpeness that more than compensated for the course vicissitudes. The clubhouse has the air of a long established members club - however the quality and efficiency of the hotel's catering and accommodation demonstrates all the advantages of a proprietry club. As we have come to expect, the food was excellent - what a pity that meals at our French venues do not compete. On Day 2 afternoon Alan organised a quiz which was won by Wiktor's team (surprise?). Chas' contention that it was a male who was thrown off Talahassee Bridge was squashed by Alan - otherwise we all meekly accepted his rulings. That night after dinner we had the customary Court Proceedings. Peter Howarth stepped into Peter Piries' prosecutor's shoes and Chas was the Judge. Few of missed being judged and fined for the most benign of offences. Many thanks to Ron and all those who hepled organise and manage a splendid tour. We shall return. |

THORPENESS 2005 - May 3, 4 and 5
unless stated otherwise all photos courtesy Mike Breedon
| Once again to Thorpeness and all its joys and
tribulations. For a good few of us it started with
Aldeburgh's renowned fish and chips on the seafront
washed down with Chablis premier cru from Wiktor B., Sancerre from Jim D.
and Semillon from Peter S. (see right). Then to Thorpness
for checking in and to the first tee to kick off three
days of challenging golf and, of course, the ambience of
the clubhouse - its with superb cuisine and welcoming
bar. The weather was good compared with other years. As to be expected the course was tough, what with the long par fours, the heather and the gorse - latter beautiful in full bloom but deadly. Despite the difficulties, the golf was enjoyed by almost all of us with talent coming to the fore - Mervyn Cooke winning the trophy. However there were some unexpected ups and downs. At the upper end our usual pinkie Richard Ellis came second on day 2 with 30 and at the lower end Reg Neville, the steadiest of us all, returned an atypical 13 on day 3. A sports quiz organised by Mike Jeffels was held on day 2 after golf. The winning team was the Dewsbury Doughboys: John Charman, Peter Pirie, Peter Howarth and Mike Powell. That evening we had the customary Court Session. It was a hoot with many thanks to Peter Pirie and Chas Bennett who was in his element. The fines raised £140 for the Club Captain's charity - Scope. Many thanks to Mervyn Cooke for a thoroughly enjoyable three days, to his able assistant vice captain Ron Webster and to Tony Oakes who helped organise the tour. |

| At left Ian Taylor looks somewhat perplexed at having received and having to wear the pink tie on the first night - whereas next evening, our ex-treasurer Brian Wilkie (at right) who has developed a taste for the dolce vita (possibly through society funds) clearly relishes in the limelight. The third pinkie, Reg Neville, looking aghast far right, contemplates receiving his tie later this year at le Touquet. | |

| SOCIETY AWAY DAY - 2004 WINTER STABLEFORD TROPHY |
| Last
year the weather at Haverhill was dreadful but the course
and the food were so good that we decided to return for
this year's winter away day. After all the weather
condition could only improve - and it did. Steak and kidney pudding and apple tart, what could be better for a winter outing. The day was thoroughly enjoyable. Mervyn Cooke our new captain made the presentations and we thank him for a splendid day. |

| SOCIETY AWAY DAY - 2004 SUMMER STABLEFORD TROPHY |
| This "summer's" away day was at Elton Furze golf course on 15 October, the main event being the Summer Stableford trophy. The weather was grim, relenting rain but fortunately little wind. However the course was in excellent condition. The meal and service were excellent. A good venue to come back to next year. |

FRANCE - 2004
| The Eighth
Venerable Tour de France was held from 28th to
30th September. This year Le Manoir was agin fully booked
so Peter Wildblood (who had taken over as tour organiser
from Peter Pirie who had enough on his plate as Club
Captain) booked us in at the Westminster Hotel in Le
Touquet. This is a large and impressive establishment
with pretensions of la belle epoque. The walls
of the public rooms are adorned with b&w photos of
celebrities from the twenties onwards. Food was excellent
- particularly the first course which was a buffet
groaning with mouth watering seafood. For our 2005 tour
we are booked into Le Manoir - it won't be as luxurious
as the Westminster, but it will be cheaper, more
comfortable and more convenient for the golf. Anyway
thanks to Peter Wildblood for sorting out the tour
arrangements and to Mervyn Cooke for standing in so
effectively for Tony Oakes who sadly could not come. Day 1 - By Channel Tunnel to Hardelot where we teed off at les Dunes at about midday. No pink ball this time as Ian Taylor, the holder from the last day at Thorpness, could not join us in France. The course was tough but the weather was kind. To Le Touquet and settling in at the Westminster Hotel. A super dinner where the day's winners and the order of play for the next day were announced - including who was to be the pink ball holder. Then to the elegant (but expensive) bar for some prolonged nightcaps. Day 2 - After a leisurely breakfast we drove the few kilometers to the LeTouquet golf club where most of us collected buggies and off to La Mer course. Once again the weather was kind and the course as challenging as ever. Back to the hotel for the traditional second day drinks hosted by Wiktor and Jim in room 211. Fortunately Mervyn had booked us into one of the larger rooms, so all 19 of us were able to squeeze in comfortably. The last dinner of the tour was a splendid occasion; food and wine superb, followed by presentations for the day's play and specially for the winner of the Bill Cook Trophy. The order of play for the next day was announced, together with the naming of the next pinkie. Not too many of us graced the bar probably because we had already drunk enough and because of the relatively early start next morning. Day 3 - A splendid, but not so leisurely breakfast was followed by checking out and driving round to the golf club. The weather was just right for our last day's play on La Foret The course was in superb condition - probably the best we have seen over the years. The 14/15th have been changed - a great improvement. It is certainly the easiest of the three courses we played, but nevertheless full of little challenges - a good course to end our tour. The day's winners were announced, the Frog awarded to the tour champion (best two rounds) and the pink ball holder named for next spring at Thorpness. After the group photo and lunch at the clubhouse for some and the Royale in town for others, we made our way home. As ever the tour was a great success and we look forward to our next visit to France. |

THORPNESS 2004 - May 4, 5 and 6
| One year
on and we returned to the rigours and relaxations of
Thorpness. On the first day we were subjected to strong
winds and driving rain. Pity the poor brave souls who
took their Aldeburgh fish and chips on the sea front -
albeit in a sort of shelter. The next two days were fine
but the golf was definitely mixed. Food and service were
excellent last year, but this year they were even better. This Venerable's UK Tour had a record attendance. The total of 31 comprised 26 from Heydon Grange (of which 14 were from the old place), four Venerables who have not joined Heydon Grange and one regular guest (John Charman no less). Unfortunately Ken Brothwell (who donated the UK Tour Trophy) and son Steve were unable to come. |

| SOCIETY AWAY DAY - 2004 WINTER STABLEFORD TROPHY |
| We
held a varied away day at Haverhill golf course on 19
March. The course was great but the weather was
appalling. We started off in reasonable conditions
despite a strong wind, but within half an hour the rains
came down with a vengeance - cold and biting. Two groups
sneaked into the comfort of the club house after the
10th, but the rest valiantly finished the 18. The Haverhill is known for its excellent cuisine and this day was no exception - homemade tomato and basil soup, steak and kidney pudding (generous helping, the size of a sandcastle), lemon tart. Good wine, surprisingly cheap. Despite the conditions we all enjoyed the day. |

| SOCIETY AWAY DAY - 2003 SUMMER STABLEFORD TROPHY |
| We held an excellent away day at Abbotsley golf course on 24 October, the main event being the Summer Stableford trophy. The weather was fine (as it has been for many months) and the course inviting. A good meal and presentations rounded off a splendid outing which we look forward to next year. |

| Sir Donald presented the Venerables with a most impressive trophy - a bronze golfer with an impeccable swing. He left it to us to organise a suitable event. Peter will be sorting something out. |
FRANCE - 2003
| The Seventh
Venerable Tour de France was held from 30th
September to 2nd October. This year Le Manoir was fully
booked so Peter P. relocated us at the Grand Hotel in Le
Touquet. This 4 star hotel which overlooks La Canche (the
estuary that runs up to Etaples), is much bigger and
grander than Le Manoir, but 5 or 10 minutes from the two
golf courses. Le Manoir is probably more comfortable and
friendly but last year's food not as good as the Grand. Day 1 - By Channel Tunnel to Hardelot where we teed off at les Dunes at about midday. Richard started us off with the pink ball inherited from Thorpness. We went out in fours - most of in buggies, except for Peter P. who had his electric trolley and Jeremy who carried. To the Grand Hotel at Le Touquet for a few drinks at the bar. Followed by a excellent dinner and presentation of the day's winners (and loser). Then back to the bar for those of strong constitution.. Day 2 - A memorable day packed with diverse events. Round to La Mer for the Bill Cook Memorial Trophy and the normal day's competition. The weather started off reasonably but soon deteriorated badly and it rained solidly till we were all back in the club house. Fortunately we were all in buggies. Back to the hotel to sort out how to dry our clothes and golf equipment. Customary second day pre-dinner drinks in room 67 hosted by Wiktor Bakiewicz and Jim Dempster (single malts) and Peter Shawdon (wine and nibbles). Another excellent meal followed by court proceedings and presentation of the day's winners (and loser). and the Bill Cook Memorial Trophy. Then to the bar where we had to compete with rather younger participants in a DHL conference. Day 3 - We woke to a hotel without hot water (some thought it was the result of a minor flood in roon 206 - but it seems that the hotel had notified us the previous day of the impending cut in comfort). We packed up, checked out and proceeded to La Foret, where we started with the putt-out between Brian (the villian) and Wiktor (the victim) which ended in an honorable draw. The weather was grand for our last day' golf . After refreshments in the club house, our Captain made the presentations for the day and for the tour. We then trooped out on the lawn for the obligatory group photo after which we dispersed and went our separate ways back home. We all had a marvellous time despite some natural (rain)and man-made (hot water) elements which on reflection were minor. |
The Cook Memorial Trophy
Bill Cook, a founder member of the Venerables, was our amazing competition and handicap secretary during the Meridian days - but more important he set up and organised our UK and France tours. He died in July of this year. To commemorate his very special contribution to the Venerables and now to the Heydon Grange seniors, we have instituted this trophy to be played on the second day of our away days. Peter Wildblood has produced a trophy comprising a whistle which reflects his school master background - which we had to endure. |
|
| Steve Brothwell was the winner with 34 Stableford Points. An appropriate result for the first time winner, as Steve and his father Ken who was Steward at the Cambridge Meridian Golf Club knew Bill well. | ![]() |

THE TALE OF A PINKIE - OR ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL
| On day 2, Colin Edge had a miserable round on La Mer. In the driving rain he could be heard to moan - "On the last two holes I have only scored one point", "On the last three holes I have only scored one point", "On the last four holes I have still only scored one point". That night, with our Captain's mild but pointed admonishments, he wore the dreaded pink tie. But his look disdain was only feigned - the twinkle in his eye told us that he would come back with a vengeance. Next morning he drove off the ladies' tee with aplomb and four shots compensation under his belt. He won the day's competition and the privilege of wearing the voluminous 'green' jacket. | ![]() |

END PIECE
![]() Peter, our captain, reads out the day's results with repressed mirth. However, Peter our tour organiser, creases himself without restraint. But Colin, the wretched first-timer, flicks his pink tie and, in the words of Oliver Hardy, says "This is a fine mess you've got me into" |
THORPNESS - 2003
| As last year we went to
Thorpness for our UK tour. From May 7 to 9 over 20
venerables and friends renewed (or in some cases, gained)
acquaintance with the gorse and heather of this fine
seaside course. The weather was just right. Golf was most
enjoyable but not spectacular - the best score being
Colin Edge's 30 stableford points on the first day. Food
was excellent - better than our last French tour. The
only sad note was Peter Wildblood succumbing to a nasty
virus - but vice captain Tony Oakes seamlessly took over
the reins. |

FRANCE - 2002
| The Sixth Venerable Tour de France was held 2 - 4 October. The usual format based on Le Manoir at Le Touquet was retained - out by Channel Tunnel, 18 holes on the way (this year at les Pins, Hardelot), la Mer, la Foret and return via the Tunnel. Twenty-four Venerables and guests attended; the weather was super (except for a little drizzle on the second day), the food was excellent (except for some complaints on the second evening meal) and everyone seems to have enjoyed the outing. It was our first French tour since leaving Meridian - we were especially delighted that some Heydon Grange seniors could join us as full members of the Society. |
| Day 1 -
By channel Tunnel to Hardelot where we teed off at les
Pins at about midday. Chas started us off with
the pink ball inherited from Thorpness, our previous
tour. We went out in fours - many of us had buggies, some
dragged trolleys and a few even carried (notably John
Tudor who kept up this feat for the three days). To Le
Manoir at Le Touquet for a few drinks at the bar
where Chas gallantly sorted out the wines for the evening
while the Captain urged us to make our selections from
the menu. A splendid dinner followed by the evening's
main entertainment - a tour de force performance of a
kangaroo court by Judge Jeremiah Newson aided and abetted
by Peter Pirie with Chas collecting and pocketing the
fines - see below for details. Thence to the bar for
solace and celebration. Day 2 -The day started with a leisurely breakfast followed by Venerable efforts to understand the programme and organise buggies. As has become custom, La Mer was the next course to receive our blessings. Brian drove off the pink ball and we launched into the toughest course of the tour. There were the usual heroics and the not so heroic. Notable heroics were an unexpected teeing off drama (see specials below) and the holing of an almost |
impossible
putt by Reg Neville. After a short bar stop we all
gathered in Room No 1 for the annual quaffing of Wiktor
and Jim's malt whisky with wine provided by Peter Shawdon
for those who wished to conserve alcoholic capacity.
Dinner was a banquet-style fixed menu. Apart from a few
cases tough beef and underdone potatoes the meal and the
wines were excellent. Toasts galore. Particular homage to
Bill, our absent founder Venerable (see below). Thence to
the bar for more solace, celebration and cognac. Day 3 - An earlier breakfast, followed by check-out and even more Venerable efforts to cope with the logistics of the day. La Foret course, seemingly benign compared with La Mer, has its particular challenges (eg 7th and 18th). Some us watched the final group on the 18th green to decide the Trophy Champion; confusing because the putts were repeated for Peter Shawdon's camcorder. In the repeat play Peter H. should have missed a long putt - but he didn't. Anyway at the presentations at the clubhouse all was put right. Peter P. got his trophy and Peter H. settled for runner-up. After the group photo we dispersed and wended our way homeward. Half of us stopped for a splendid meal at our usual fin-de-tour restaurant in Le Touquet. |

THORPNESS - 2002
| The 2002 UK away tour was held from 8
to 10 May at Thorpness on the Suffolk coast just north of
Aldeburgh. For those who haven't played Thorpness, the
course is very, very taxing. The fairways are tight, with
gorse and heather to plague those who stray off course.
The real killer is the length of the par 4 holes, of
which there are 13; there is only one par 5. These long,
difficult par 4s make it hard to turn in a good score.
Those who have played the course before (including four
who are Thorpness members) fared little better. On the
bright side the weather was generally kind and the course
really beautiful - even the pig farm and the Sizewell
nuclear power station have their attraction. The apres-golf followed in the Venerables' tradition enhanced by the gracious amenities of the clubhouse, particularly the atmosphere of an old-established golf club bar. The food was excellent and Chas selected some very fine wines to wash it down. It was good to see all the familiar Vens and Friends. Of the 22 who came on our first Society tour, 12 are from Heydon Grange, 4 are likely to join Heydon Grange, 4 are from other clubs in the Cambridge area and 2 are friends. The spirit of the Venerables is secure. |

TOUR DE FRANCE - 2001 |
| This year's
continental away tour involved three days' golf and two
nights at Le Manoir hotel at le Touquet. As usual Bill
Cook's arrangements were surprisingly excellent. The
party was twenty three in total of which seven were
honorary or apprentice venerables, or guests. Day 1 By channel Tunnel to Hardelot where we teed off at les Dunes at about midday. Bill had organised 10 buggies which were a great saviour for all of us who went out in fours - but not for the three's who included Bill. The day's winner was Mervyn Cook with runners up Steve Brothwell, John Pinto and John Charman. After check-in at le Manoir we enjoyed the customary quaffing of malt whisky in Wiktor and Jim's room. Unfortunately Wiktor could not come this year, but he generously provided a bottle of Macallans. Jim's room-mate this time was Radders, but that's another story. Dinner was the usual mixture of gastronomy and bonhomie with an interesting toast by Peter Pirie in reply to a comment from an adjoining table that we should proceed in a more doucement fashion. Day 2 Good breakfast and a leisurely start at la Mer course. The weather was grand - in fact the best we have known of all the four years we have played the Opal Coast courses. The fairways and greens were superb - there could be no excuse for some of the high scores. The winner was John Pinto and the runners up Steve Brothwell, Ron Ward and Ron Webster. Drinks, dinner and drinks at le Manoir lived up to the excesses of past years. |
Day 3
Sadly the last day came upon us all too soon.
Check out after breakfast followed by a stroll across to
the club house and tee off at la Foret course.
Again the weather was splendid and the course superb.
Winner of the day was Jim Dempster with runners up Peter
Howarth, Mervyn Cooke and John Charman. Back to the club
house for light drinks and eats. Then came the
calculations and the overall awards. Tour winner was
Mervyn Cooke with runner ups Ron Ward, Peter Howarth and
Ken Martin.
