About Meridian

About Meridian

Role-playing is a social hobby.  It is based around communication and story-telling.  It is a people pastime.

However, not everyone is always able to meet up.  Geography can be a killer.  For that reason, the Meridian Gaming Group was established to create a place for gamers to meet and arrange games over IRC or email.  Its aim is to provide an English language portal for gamers anywhere in the Greenwich Mean Time zone from which it derives its name.  Of course, this doesn’t preclude people in other time zones or speakers of other languages; it’s just catering to GMT and English speakers first and foremost.

The Games

The Games

The aim is to support a variety of systems, such as Call of Cthulhu, White Wolf’s World of Darkness (old or new) or D20 Modern.  If sufficient interest is gathered, the emphasis may shift to a more fantasy orientated system such as Dungeons and Dragons.

The Method

The Method

The purpose of the Meridian Gaming Group is to create regular RPG sessions without the constraints of geography.  Hence the group will be using instant messaging and email to conduct its gaming.  The reason for this is twofold: first and foremost, it means everyone can get a game in their own home.  Secondly, it reduces the burden of suspension of disbelief; it is much easier to imagine someone as an Elf or Dwarf when you don’t know so much about them in real-life.

We will be using fairly basic IRC clients to keep things simple.  The basic MSN or Windows messengers that come with most versions of Windows or an ISP / internet portal client should be perfectly fine.  Technology is very much a means to an end!

The Meridian Gaming Group is currently under discussion, here, on the RPG.net Forums.  A Yahoo Group has also been established which will see more use when the games actually start.
