The End of the World
By Alex Manno
It all began a while ago, in the 20th century. Zork the alien from Mercury was less than one year old. Zark and Zaccona (his parents) had been married for a few years, and they loved their new baby. But technology on Mercury was great, and the scientists couldn't hide the bad news. They didn't want anybody to know at first, but it soon slipped out that the end of the world was approaching. Mercury was going to be blown to bits. A meteor was coming, and it would only take three more Zenons (one week on Earth) until Mercury was destroyed. "What are we going to do?" Zark asked Zaccona one day. "I mean, we just had a baby. I can't let this baby die. I like him. I've always dreamed of having a son, and now my dream is ruined. There must be something we can do."  "There's nothing we can do, Zark," Zaccona said. Zark sighed and stared at Zaccona's long, brown hair. That might be the last time he could see it, if the scientists were wrong and the meteor would strike in just a few seconds instead of three Zenons. "I just know there's something we can do, Zaccona. I feel as though we can save Zork." Zork looked up at Zark as he said his name. Zork's big eyes sparkled in the sunlight (of course, there was a LOT of sunlight, because it was on Mercury). Zark almost cried, but he held back his tears. He wasn't crying because HE was going to die, it was because of Zork and Zaccona. He didn't think it was fair for them to die. In what felt like minutes, there was less than one Zenon left (24 hours left). Zaccona held Zork in her arms, crying. She kept saying "Everything's gonna be alright, Zorky. Everything's gonna be alright." Zork reached out and touched Zaccona's face. He looked curious as to why his mom, a grown woman, was crying. He hadn't seen that in his entire life. Then Zork knew something was going on. Everything felt so sad, like there would be no Mercury in less than one day. So, when Zark and Zaccona were talking to each other (saying their last thoughts before they died), Zork snuck out. He went to the top of a nearby mountain and looked down. He had always wanted to see the bottom, but his mom wouldn't let him get close enough. He wanted to see the whole planet before it was gone. Then Zark ran out. "Zork! What are you doing?" Zark looked over the edge. "Yeah, you wanna see everything before..." A tear dropped from his eye and fell on Zork's head. Zork looked up. He couldn't take it. He had to do something. So, when there was only 5 minutes left, Zark and Zaccona had gathered around the main room in their cave home. They were both crying very hard. Zaccona was about to hug Zork, but he escaped. He crawled quickly out of the cave and to the top of the cliff. Then he looked up. He saw it. A big, flaming rock. Bigger than anything he had seen. And it was getting bigger every second. Zark and Zaccona ran towards him. The meteor was coming so close, all the aliens could smell it. Zark's neighbors were outside too, sobbing. They were all looking up at the meteor, and then... it happened. It all happened so quick, nobody really saw what happened. The meteor was heading straight for Zork, and then Zaccona jumped towards it. There was a big explosion, and then no sound. Everybody looked, and there was a pile of ashes where Zaccona had been. She was gone. Nobody ever saw her again. And the meteor was gone too. It had been destroyed by something, but everybody doubted that Zaccona had stopped it. It couldn't have been her. She was just a regular alien. Right?
