Pierre Simon Mercier Pierre Simon Mercier was our first Mercier in New France. Pierre was born in St-Jean-en-Greve, Ile de France, Paris, France. He travelled to New France around 1720, where he met & married Marie Rhene Pineau.
Marie Rhene Pineau Marie Rhene Pineau married our first Mercier, but her family had already been in New France for 2 generations. One of Marie Rhene's grandmothers, Marie Grandin, was a member of that special group of women known as the Filles du Roi, or the Daughters of the King. Marie Grandin's story about her life as a Filles du Roi was told in the wonderful novel, Marie Grandin: Sent by the King. Mor information about this great book can be found at amazon.com

Much of the public information about our Mercier line has a great many errors in it. Some due to persons with similar names getting merged together, some due to errors in traditionally accepted transcriptions, and some due to lost documents. Most of the errors suscribe Pierre Simon & Marie Rhene's descendants to another of the original 6 Mercier men that arrived in New France and from which all Merciers from Canada descend.*
* My parents were members of AMAN - the Association des Mercier d'Amerique du Nord - for years while we tried to make a familial connection to their available information. When we asked for assistance, we did not receive a response. After I completed our research on my own, I went to the association to discuss discrepencies with the information they have posted online. The number of descendants of our Pierre Simon Mercier & Marie Rhene Pineault have been dramatically underestimated, most of them being subscribed to the Julien Mercier line. Again AMAN didn't respond. However they continually asked for membership dues. (My parents are nno longer members). Their organization is either very disorganized or they are unconcerned with the accuracy of the information they present about the Mercier lines. If anyone can help in building a relationship with this organization to discuss these matters, I would appreciate assistance.
Here's my line: Teresa< my dad< my grandfather Mercier< my Great grandparents were John B Mercier & Rose Adeline DeMars. This information is assumed to be accurate. Beyond this generation I will present proof of ancestry. If anyone has questions about the accuracy or reliability of the information presented, please contact me, mercier_beaucoup at yahoo.com. Some of the documents are posted at my flickr site.
Generation #1: Marriage record of John B Mercier & Rose Adeline DeMars. An image of this marriage record is available at ancestry.com, in the Drouin collection of records from St Anne de Detroit, Michigan. The document reads: "On the 24th day of November 1857, before me, the undersigned priest, the three proclamations (of banns) having preceded a legitimate contract entered into by John Baptiste, who is 19 years, son of John Baptiste Mercier and Flavie Jacques, and Rosa, who is 16 years, daughter of Antoine DeMars and Marie Rose Nolet. Witnesses: Toussaint DeMars and Cecelia Lorraine."
Generation #2: Marriage record of Jean B Mercier & Flavia Jacques. This record had been previously lost through a transcription error. They were married at Cote St Paul, MI. This record had been erroneously transcribed, and as such, had been lost to our Mercier family. This loss has had a serious negative impact on the ability for our Merciers to be able to research our line. Working upon a theory I contacted the Notre Dame University Archives, where the original document is kept. They sent me a digital copy of the original document, agreeing that the name "Oevmont", which had been standardized to "Ouimet" was actually written as "Clermont". The document reads as follows: "30 July 1834 I joined in holy matrimony, JBte Mercier, son of Francois and Isabelle Clermont, born in Beloeil, diocese of Montreal, on one part, and Flavia Jacques, daughter of Francois and Lacivia Ancor (sic: Luce Vaillancourt), born in Comorasko(sic: Kamoraska), diocese of Quebec, the other party. Witnesses: JJ LeJean, Laurent Vernier, & Leo Vernier."
Generation #3: Marriage record of Francois Mercier and Elisabeth (Isabelle) Vantalon dit Clermont. The marriage occurred at St Mathieu de Beloeil, Vercheres, QC. The document reads as follows: "14 Aug 1788. After the publication of three marriage banns [ ] parishioners of this parish, for three consecutive Sundays, Francois Mercier, son of Joseph Mercier & Marie Amable Giard, the father and the mother of the parish, [ ] Antoine, the other part, Elisabeth Vantalon dit Clermont, daughter of Antoine Vantalon dit Clermont & Marguerite Davignon dit Beauregrd, the father and mother of this parish." The record goes on to describe that the witnesses give consent, and the names of the witnesses.
Generation #4: Marriage record of Joseph Mercier and Marie Amable Giard. The marriage took place in Contrecoeur, Ste-Trinite, QC. The document reads as follows: "The year one thousand seven hundred fifty-four, the seventh of October, after the publication of three banns completed at masses for parishioners for three consecutive Sundays, the publication completed at the parish of Vercheres... to learn of any impediment of marriage between Joseph Mercier, son of the late Pierre Simon Mercier and of Marie Renee Pinault, the father and the mother of Vercheres the first part, and Amable Giard, the daughter of the late Gabiel Giard and of Suzanne Menard, the father and the mother of Contrecoeur, the other part". The document goes on to state that mutual consent has been given by those in attendance, who are listed: For the groom: Pierre Simon Mercier, brother; Jean Baptiste L'Amoreaux; Marie Marguerite Guillet, sister (sister-in-law, Pierre's wife); Joseph L'Amoreaux, friend. For the bride: Antoine Giard, brother; Joseph St. Onge, brother-in-law (husband of .....); (Francois) Richard Giard, brother (her step-brother), Nicolas Dupont, brother-in-law (husband of Marie Angelique Giard) .
Generation #5: Baptismal record of Joseph Marie Mercier, son of Pierre Simon Mercier & Marie Pinau. The document reads as follows: "Year 1728, 1st of February, baptized by me, Jean Bouffandeau, parish priest of Vercheres, a boy born this morning of the marriage of Pierre Simon Mercier Verger of this parish, and Marie Pinau, of the given name Josef Marie. The godfather this Monsieur Josef Jaret (Joseph Jarret) of Pouligny and the godmother Marie Marguerite D'Audelin, who declare unable to sign on this record, Pierre (Simon) Mercier, Josef de Pouligny, Bouffandeau."
