Firing the First Shot
                       Objective
At the conclusion of Lesson III you will be able to:
1. Demonstrate the knowledge, skill and attitude needed to safely shoot a rifle on a range.
   
2. Shoot at a target using the five fundamentals of rifle shooting.

3. Identify the materials needed to clean a rifle.

4. Demonstrate how to clean a rifle safely.

5. Show progress towards earning the Pro-Marksmanship Qualification Awards.
                         Shooting Safety Rules
1. Be sure the gun is safe to operate
2. Know how to safely use the gun
3. Use only the correct ammunition for your gun
4. Know your target and what is beyond
5. Wear eye and ear protection as appropriate
6. Never use alcohol or drugs before or while shooting
7. Store guns so they are not accessible to unauthorized persons.

                                         
Firing the First Shot

1. Step 1 - Study characteristics of benchrest position
    a. Position of the body
       * body sits behind table facing target
       * both elbows rest on table
       * rifle lies in left hand and is supported by solid suport
    b. Position of the rifle
       * butt of stock is poisitioned against shoulder so rifle sights are at eye level
2. Step 2 - Practice positin without the rifle
    a. simulate the firing position
3. Step 3 - Practice position with the rifle
    a. Take a seat at the table facing the target
    b. Grasp rifle grip with right hand and position elbows on table
    c. Lay rifle across left hand and rest hand on support
    d. Position rifle against face and shoulder so that dominant eye can look through
        sights comfortably and naturally
4. Step 4 - Align position with the target
    a. Vertical adjustments can be made by adjusting the height of the support
    b. Horizontal adjustments can be made by moving the support to either the left or
        right on the table
5. Step 5 - Dry-firing rifle at target aplying the fundamentals
    a. Shooting position
    b. Shot preparation
    c. Sight picture control
    d. Trigger control
    e. Follow through
6. Step 6 - Shoot groups at target with 5 ammunition
    a. Shot groups
7. Step 7 - Adjust sights to center shot group on target
