How was IQ born?
IQ, or Intelligence Quotient, is a general assessment of a person's capacity to think and reason. The IQ level indicates how a person compares in relation to other kids at his/her age. IQ is a French invention and was originally intended to measure the intelligence of children and adolescents. It was almost 100 years ago (in 1905) that psychiatrists Alfred Binet (photo at right) and Théophile Simon were hired by the French Ministry of Education to develop a method of identifying children who had difficulty keeping up with a school curriculum.
Mr. Binet then developed a series of evaluation tests that measured mental capacities of children from 3 to 11 years-old through different types of activities. These tests ranged from very simple tasks to complicated exercises such as looking for synonyms for an uncommon word. The following are some examples of tests originally given by Alfred Binet and Théophile Simon to children:
- Unwrapping a candy and eating it;
- Identifying colors in an image;
- Memorizing a grocery list;
- Arranging weights in increasing order (from 3 to 15 grams);
- Drawing a square, a cylinder and a diamond from memory;
- Constructing sentences using certain words (example, "Paris", "fortune" and "river").

Your results as compared to others
This curve indicates the distribution of IQ levels in the general population. It's exactly the same distribution whether the test concerns children or adults. This means that if everyone, regardless of language differences, took part in this test, approximately two out of three people would obtain an average score ranging between 85 and 115. One out of six would be positioned below the average while the same number would be positioned above the average. Very low or very high scores are usually rare.
