, "I know you are very young but today you have to be brave, for yourselves and for your father he will need you now more than ever.Paige,Mercedes your mother was in an accident earlier this morning",At this a great sound like that of one of those great big animals Mercedes had seen in an California zoo came from her father as he collapsed into tears.Mercedes didn't understand and said"Grandma what kind of accident ?Is mommy in the hospital?"'No, my heart mommy is in heaven with the angels", at this Mercedes ran out the room screaming,"NONO,MOMMY'S UPSTAIRS...MOOOOMMMYYYYY!!,noone ran after Mercedes instead Grandma Beth pulled Paige who had grown very quiet and become very still into her bosom and smoothed her hair back.Paige didn't understand why her grandma did this she wasn't crying like a baby like her father , she hadn't ran upstairs screaming like her little sister.She was perfectly fine, some sort of clarity had come over her she knew the moment that her father had burst into tears what was wrong, and that now she was the one that would have to hold the family together..her mother had told her every since she was 7, that the day would come that she would have to look after Mercedes and her father,like her mother knew and was grooming her for this day, no Paige would not cry again like a little baby nor would she be held like one. She knew what she had to do. Her mother had also left her a book, told her to read it the night that she died it was her father's family history, Paige promise only to read it when her mother died,and Paige knew without being told tonight was the night, tonight Paige would read the book she had held onto for 3 years. | |||||||||
| Paige pushed from her grandma and said in a calmed voice,a little to calm for a 10 year old whom had just been told her mother was dead,"I am fine, I am going to go talk to Mercedes she doesn't understand , Grandma please calm father down." At that Paige turned and walked upstairs she didnt wait for her grandma's response.Grandma Beth slowly got to her feet and went over to Alexandre who was still letting out the sounds only a person could make when told someone they loved with all their heart had passed.She held onto him and tried to comfort him, to tell him he needed to be strong for his children they needed him more than ever now,none of this seemed to be sinking in at all,and Paige's detachment truly bothered Grandma Beth.Uncle Ted helped Alexandre stand up as he tried some small amount of composure , Beth was sure finally he would go upstairs and talk with his daughters instead Alexandre turned and after straightening his tie said,"I have to go to the hospital and make arrangements,I need to see her again, this is all my fault if i had not married her she would still be alive , my beautiful....,at this he turned and went out the door.Upstairs Paige looked out the window as her father got into the car ,then over at her little sister who yet again had ran to the corner clutching the porcelain doll.A doll that matched her own, their mother had given them both the same doll on their birthday,Paige and Mercedes were both born the same day and exact same hour and second as each other 5 years apart, so birthdays were a true celebration at their house.Paige walked over to her sister and pulled her to her feet and smoothed her long black silky smoothe hair,the same hair they both had gotten from their mother,along her back, "Mercedes you do understand what is happening right?".Mercedes slowly shook her head ,"Why would grandma say those bad things about my mommy ,Mommy is coming home right Paige?"Paige looked at her little sister and slowly shook her head no, "Mercedes , mommy is dead she will never come home again but she will always live here in your heart". | ||||||||||
