This 23-year-old R&B sensation in the making has been picked up by the Roc-A-Fella Records brain trust (headed by Damon Dash, Kareem Biggs Burke, and multi-platinum artist Jay-Z) as the first male solo R&B act signed to the label. Originally from Bowman, South Carolina, Rell honed his vocal skills in the church choir as well as singing lead in local groups. Some of his musical influences include Donnie Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. The young and eager vocalist ventured north, armed with talent and a disciplined work ethic. He soon developed a close-knit relationship with New York based production company Top Ten. In 1998, Top Ten connected with Roc-A-Fella, introducing them to Rell's attributes. Within no time, Rell's aspirations of a recording deal became reality.
Produced by Mike City, OShea Hunter, Brian Palmer, Eric Williams and Bernard Bell, Rell's full-length album, The Remedy, drops summer 2001. Rell also has been keeping busy writing, arranging and performing on a few classic hip-hop albums such as Dr Dres Chronic 2001, Jay-Zs The Dynasty and Streets Is Watching, and DJ Clues Backstage. He's acted in two films, Streets Is Watching and Get Down Or Lay Down. |
