What is in an Introduction?
What is an introduction. Well, in a speech we have 3 parts; the introduction, the main body, and the conclusion. All have different jobs. On this page, we'll speek on the introduction.
The introduction includes the first things you will say when you stand up to give your speech. At this moment you need to get your audiences attention. This is the moment of your first impression. By what you say here the audience will decide to either listen or fall asleep.
For example, if you were to stand up to an audience of 50 adults and say "Hi my name is Bobby Lewis and I'm going to give a speech on world hazards." I gaurentee that the only 2 people that will be awake by the end of the speech will be your parents.
Now lets say that you stood up and said, "Vehicle emissions, aresol sprays, and nuclear waste are destroying our life support, the Earth" I'm sure that there will be a lot more people awake.
What is the difference?
What do you want to listen to? A boring person with a monotone voice? Or somebody who is enthusiastic about his topic? Listen to the wording, in the second example - Nuclear, destroy, life support. All of those are words that grab attention.
In an introduction one needs to grab the attention or the listeners. Stand straight, look into the audience, and show emotion for that which you're saying.
Show people the importance of your topic, show them that you know what you're talking about, make them curious about what you're going to say next.
Questions you need to ask about your introduction, does it:
     Get attention
     Establish credibility
Give the audience a reason for listening
     Introduce the topic
Give a preview of the main points?
